hey i was wondering what a decent top down lense would be. im not sure if it would be good or not to have a wider angle lense, i also would like to get as much of the coral in focus as possible. it will be a for a canon. thanks guys.

I would use a wide angle myself but the distance from the lens to the subject is a large factor for consideration. If I could use any lens but only one, I would pick the 17-55 f/2.8 IS. The 10-22 would be my 2nd choice.

aighty. the distance will be any weres from 6 inch to 24 inch.

wow any cheeper suggestions for it. dam i dont want to spend that much for just a top down lense. any other brands with the same compatability.

Basically, anything that works in that focusing range. If you're looking for a less expensive wide angle alternative I absolutely loved my Tokina 12-24. Not being able to use it anymore was my only regret in moving the to 5D.

Well like I said before, "If I could use any lens" from Canon's diverse arsenal. You didn't give me a price ceiling. Beerguy's advise was sound and cost effective. If you add an extension tube, you can reduce the focus distance of any lens. They can also be found in any serious Macro kit.
