I currently have a redsea Berlin HOB skimmer running as a hob but off my sump. Under my 55.

It pulls about 1/2 cup of very funky skimmate every 2 days generall,

But here is my problem, every so often when I start it back up after feeding, et6c.. it will foam out like crazy, and overflow the cup.

It will do this for a few minutes and them go back to normal. There seems to be no reason for this I can track down. I clean the entire skimmer thoroughly ever 3 weeks.

I have no intentions of replacing this skimmer in the near future.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what could cause this??

If you set the skimmer too low ( in an out of sump design ) then the outflow of the skimmer forms a siphon.

Once you start it, it overflows until the siphon is established, then settles down & will run fine, but makes a mess.

I had the same problem with my AquaC run out-of-sump. I elevated the skimmer & made sure the outflow runs downhill all the way to the sump. That solved my problem.

The outflow is above the waterline, so thats not the issue, and it only happens occasionally.??

I am very puzzled.
