Okay. I have a young mafia thug of a Clown fish.
(Only fish in the tank.)

He hosts EVERYTHING in my tank... including my Zoes and encrusting gorgonian!

In any case, I think that he/she could use a good woman or man to play with and chill out a little.

The question is, what kind of clown would be compatible. Do I have to get a False Perc like he/she is or could I get a black and white one or a marroon one? Or... would he/she be just as happy alone?

I am not looking to breed them, I just want to add a friend and would really love a black and white one, but don't want to make a bad situation.

You can get away with a true perc but no b&w or maroons (especially that) but i recommend a same species (false) because then they will look nice and will/should mate easier.

Would they fight with each other if they are not the same colors?

Not colors but species

I guess we should mention to be sure to pick one up that is signicantly smaller than the one you already have so the bigger one can gain dominance

Oh!... One of the LFS's recomended to get one a bit bigger to keep the one I have from beating up on the new-commer.

A smaller one would be more accepted?

I guess I am also confused on the species thing.

My google search shows up with the black and white also being listed "Black & White False Percula"... which I am thinking is the same species as my False Perc, but a differnt color morph. Is this not correct?

that im not sure on, but clowns are both born male and will "fight" in early stages of there life to establish a dominant female and if you get them to mature (females) they wont be able to switch back and will just kill eachother

Including the tail... about 1 1/2 inches.

Best not to mix clown species, especially the Maroon clowns, as mentioned above.

So a black and white false perc and my normal (orange and white) false perc would be okay?

I have had the orange one for about 4 weeks and the BW about 3 weeks....So beats me! I am just glad they're still alive!
They are basically all i have in the tank so far except for some small critters and a couple zoas.

Clowns are born sexless and through time one will establish dominance and become female. It sounds as if your clown is not yet sexed therefore it would be best to get a smaller clown to form a pair. People have b&w clowns mate with orange quite often, so I assume with ideal coditions and with time you could do the same.

Do they ever mate? Most def! Obviously it's not a given but it happens all the time. My fav. LFS has a breeding pair of a False perc/ and a BW perc! The fry/offspring have a large amount of black on them with the orange! Looks awesome! and yes get a smaller one then the one you already have, bc chances are yours has already become a female seeing as how they are no other females present. If you were to get a bigger one you could end up with two females. I'm down with lesbians, but they would undoubtedly fight to the death.

YEA!!!

I will begin my search for a good and healthy black and white that is smaller than my guy... Er... Girl.

Good to know it can be done! I am excited.
