View Full Version : Bamboo? Shark Setup

The tank I am thinking of is going to be either 72*30*24 or 96*30*24 (possibly 30" high/possibly 36" wide). With a sump/fuge setup made with 100g rubbermaid containers.

My first question is...is that tank going to be large enough to accomodate an adult specimen or 2?

The next question is about tankmates/aquascaping...I would like to set-up something to have the sharks in a reef...with other fish/inverts and possibly some coral. Is there a way to meet both the sharks needs and corals needs without sacrificing the needs of the other?

Neither of those tanks are capable of supporting one, much less two, Bamboo Sharks (I take it you mean Brownbanded Bamboo AKA Black Banded Cat). For those tank sizes, the only sharks suitable would be the Coral Cat shark, Marbled Catshark, or Freycinet's Epaulette (A very beautiful and expensive species).

Sharks in reefs are generally a bad idea. They tend to be very destructive on the reef environment by knocking over corals and toppling rock structures. Also, they cannot be kept with corals that have stinging cells.

Before you take the plunge with sharks, set up a normal SW tank, at least 55g, and get some experience keeping the more common SW fish. Also, do plenty of research before you try your hand at keeping them.

Join here, www.sharkraycentral.com, for some of that research.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. Signed up for that forum. Thanks

I've had more than a couple SW tanks in my day. Just none of them terribly fancy.

No problem.

Since you said possibily 36" wide a 96 x 36 x 24 would be more than enough for one to two banded catsharks.
Agreed though, you dont want to do a reef with them.

I don't think it'd be more than enough for two. It'd be OK for one for its life, but definitely not two full grown 36" sharks.
