Hahaha
You know, I'm not big on the skimmate pics. Trust me, its pulling out dark, nasty junk as we speak.
I've got some goodies coming from Victor when his next shipment arrives. As do you, I'm sure :D
Maybe I'll throw some new shots up one the airstar comes in ;)
How about you? I haven't seen your skimmer since like March :p

Hey guys, I am just at the point of enough cash to buy one of these skimmers, my question is which one; the small? It will be a 75g with a sump that is about 29g of water, roughly 104g of water total. I plan on stocking heavily on fish. Victor what do you think? Thanks in advance.

Definitely a small, I have a medium on a 210 its more than enough for my tank right now. BTW people are pretty much only using the original ATB skimmer club thread (this one was made when the original wasnt working)

Is there a pin wheel version for the small yet???
I really want to go Medium Airstar, but I ended up only upgrading to a 140g w/ 40g sump... I'm thinking that a medium would be crazy overkill... I have 2 small tangs, a bellus angel, 2 chromis, 3 anthias, a mandarin, and a Randall's gobie... I'll probably add a little bit to the stock list, but not too much...
(Tried to post this in the original thread, but I think its broke again)

there has always been a needle wheel option for the small.
you will be fine with the small on a 180G, i would go for the small recirc/external even if you run it in sump, i just love the idea of a recirculating cone with gravity feed direct from overflow..

I should have waited for the ext small.... Oh well.
Question, how many inches from teh top do you set your skimmer? Victor said 2", but it started to overflow a bit at that height. btw, my skimmer sits in 6" of water.

Hey Victor,
Thanks for the phone call man. Was completely unexpected. I'll check my eggcrate rack to make sure it's completely level. Maybe the front is 6 1/2, but maybe the back is above 6 3/4.
Thanks again! Oh, and for the number too!!!

can somebody explain to me why cones work so well? What advantages do they have over a regular designed skimmer?
spsfreak
07/09/2008, 06:07 AM
I can only guess, but I think it has to do with the fact of funneling the fine bubbles into a more specified space and doing it with less turbulance, thus creating a more stable foam head. I could be wrong, but I think that is the gist of it... the pump helps too.

how do these skimmers rate to other high end skimmers?
spsfreak
07/09/2008, 07:56 AM
After all the information I read through on this and other boards, this skimmer is one of, if not the best on the market. The class these skimmers seem to fall under are as follows:
ATB, Bubble King, Deltec. That is just what I have read and found for myself, that is of course why I just purchased a small cone myself.

I agree as well another great thing about ATB is their awesome support/customer service Victor is really a top notch guy and while I was looking around in the Bubble King thread some of the issues did not get handled as well as I would have liked if I had spent some major $$$ on a high end skimmer like that. For example, I got my skimmer and was just setting it up a little after midnight and it was not pulling any air. So I got on RC sent Victor a PM and he responded within 15 minutes and gave me his number telling me to call him. Gave him a call and all I had to do was loosen the mesh a little bit and my skimmer was running perfectly. That is definitely not the type of CS you get everyday and I think thats pretty awesome of Victor
