Is childrens play sand mixed with live sand OK to use?

if you're talking about crushed coral or coral sand, then yes a lot of people use it. Some say it's good, others say it can have impurities. Be careful with "mixing though.. if the live sand is already in the tank, too much agitation can release some bad things. People suggest adding small amounts to different parts of the tank every few days. Oh, and welcome to reef central, although i don't know how to give you that nice welcome animation.. i'm sure someone else will :)

I don't know if it is crushed coral or not. It is for childrens sand box. I thought if it's safe for my kids then it should be safe for fish!!

IMO...I would only use real Live Sand from the LFS. Think of it like this......

Your not sure & then the tank crashes....WAS it worth the chance ???

To me, be sure & be safe....

IMO live rock and the sand bed form the biological filtration for your tank. You shouldn't cut corners here.
Buy good quality live rock and a medium grade true argonite sand

Stay away from crushed coral. It traps debris and nitrates and phosphates easily and is very hard to clean. This can lead to algae and cyano problems on the substrate and it looks ugly.

Here is a good read on how a sand bed works--it might influence your choice of sand bed;)

add 1 lb of live sand and in 6 months, it will all be live.....yes. PlayGround sand is safe.

Not all playground sand is safe. Please research, before purchase of any kind of playground sand or anything suspect. Capt. is correct. I wouldn't cut corners on this part of setup.
