As general rule of thumb does anyone use the black pre filter they come with? after 5 or 6 month mine clogs up and slows down the flow. My question is if I get a little sand or algae in my pump is it going to ruin it?

probably not, but wait for a better answer.

i would say, however, that if you put a fish, shrimp or anemone through the pump, 'something' will be ruined!

The only thing I put on mine is the plastic screen. It's my everything pump, anytime I need some water outta something. Just today I sucked up several small pebbles from a koi tank, it spit em right through. Algae and sand? Nah, unless you constantly have sand being sucked through, that would probably wear stuff down over time.
