View Full Version : Did I get a busted ph probe?

My ph probe looked like it would had salt creep all over it when I pulled it out of the RKE box. I thought this might mean it was pre-calibrated? (altho, unless my tank is running at 9.0 ph, the calibration didn't hold)
Anywhoo, I tried to calibrate it and when I put it in the 10.0 ph it is stuck at 7, same at 7, and when I put it in my tank, its still says 7. Basically it just never changes. Is the probe broken?

Also, make sure to take the cap off of the pH probe and rinse off the crystals from the probe if you have not already done this step.
The next step would be to recalibrate. See if the raw value at the bottom of the calibration screen changes at all. If it does, make sure it stops changing before going on to the next cal point.
Hope that helps.

No worries! It actually happens all the time.

don't feel bad, I wondered the same thing, seemed like it could come off, but didn't want to break the damn thing. Read though the instructions, and no instructions on it, but guess because it was a 3rd party product I went over to the pinpoint site and got the instructions there.

My cap was soo tight I thought I was going to break it, may be the 110 degree heat here in Phoenix, the ups truck doesn't get here till late in afternoon.

Mine had the salt creep but was "dry". I'll see how well it works, but I seem to remember the caps and the fiber material being noticeably "wet"...
Anyone else have this problem?

Salt creep has been on every probe I ever purchased. The heat of the day during storage squeezes some of the salt water up the cap and it dries on the edge making a salt powder. The only time you need to worry is if the inside of the cap is totaly dry.

That makes sense... IMO it was dry. I'll go find the cap and take a peek.
Robby, did you pick one up? Are we preaching to the converted?

There should be a piece of cotton or sponge in the cap that was wet that the tip was against.

Yeah. There is. And it's dry...
:(
Not quite sure what to look for to see if there's a problem or not... Any idea?

Not 100% sure, but I think you would have problems calibrating it.
