Anyone have any tips on fish traps, more specifically trapping a Goby that has an appetite for peppermint shrimp.

Somebody told me once, I've never tried it yet, that a plastic 1 liter coke bottle will work. Tie a piece of string onto the neck of the bottle, place some food in the bottle and wait for the fish to enter the bottle.
Yank the bottle when the fish enters.
Hope this works.

I've actually used this type with African Cichlids. What you need to do is cut the bottle right where it flares to create the neck, then take the neck and cut off the threaded top slightly larger than the fish you want to catch, secure the inverted neck portion into the main bottle part backwards (so it's like a funnel into the bottle) with a bit of "super glue" then bait it and wait.
We tried this with the Goby, it just doesn't like the bottle.
Perhaps if we submerged it into the sandbed some it might work.
Still looking for suggestions.

Did the coke bottle trick with my cichlids. Settle it in the sand bed with a little food. They'll see it and go in. If you cut the bottle right, you won't need any glue- just cut the 'neck' off, reverse it and shove it in.
Make sure you're using a clear one and that you've taken all the plastic wrap off. Also, I cut slots in the bottom of the bottle so the water could drain in and out of the 2 liter.
It took a while for the first fish to go in, but once he did the other's curiosity dragged them in. I would catch 2-3 at a time this way. When they turn around, they swim against the edge of the bottle so they never can swim back out of the hole in the center.

Do you suppose that would work for an emerald crab?

Cheap enough to try.

I successfully used the soda bottle trap (I used a 2-liter bottle) to catch a 6-line wrasse. Before setting the trap, I skipped my normal evening feeding the night before. I figured the fish would be more hungry than normal. I had the 6-line wrasse trapped within 5 minutes.

Everything stated about the plastic bottle/2 liter bottle is right on. It might take a while (maybe a few days) until the fish get use to it and not perceive it as a threat. Adding some food in the bottle and anchoring down with a small but heavy rock inside the bottle will help too.

+2 You can make it work quicker if you skip a day's feeding like mentioned by grisco. Works like a charm.

I have had some problems trying to catch fish recently and after trying for several weeks with what seemed like a hundred different methods, I was able to catch my fish by attracting and distracting them with a mirror. They become occupied by their reflection and can be netted easily. All of my fish go to the mirror, no exceptions.
