View Full Version : Killing Mushroom corals?

Has anyone ever had to intentionally kill mushroom corals? If so, how did you do it? Can I simply "cut" them off the LR they are attached too?

The reason I'm looking to do this is there are 4 purple mushrooms in a place I want to now add an SPS coral. And unforunatly, they are attached to a vary large peice of base rock that can not be removed from the tank.

Thanks for the help!

Sell the rock. Revise the rock structure. It's SOOOO much easier.
Cut, they will reproduce. Smashed, they will reproduce even faster.
i've heard that a trigger may eat them---but its appetite isn't limited to shrooms.

I just replied to a similar topic on the Reef Discussion forum.. can't remember if you started that thread or not. Anyways... fluke tab (tiny amount) will pretty much KILL them. Be advised that it will also kill just about every softies in your tank minus aptasias.

try Joe's Juice. I've actually heard it works better on mushrooms than aiptasia!

I do have some Joe's Juice at home right now. Has anyone else tried this before?

Set fire to them....really...

I remember another thread on another forum about a guy trying to get rid of the shrooms on this rock. They bury themselves pretty deep into the rock.

IME, mushrooms are difficult to "kill." Even if you can, I'd be concerned with all the dead mushroom tissue impacting your water quality.

I've taken an old screwdriver and sharpened the edge like a chisel. Then using the screwdriver to chisel out mushroom including a small slice of LR attached to the mushroom base. This assures you get all the mushroom, because there is a good chance another will regenerate if you leave any behind.

Do this outside of the tank over a bucket of water if possible..makes it much easier than doing in the tank.

Then you can take the fragments and super glue them to larger pieces of rubble rock to sell or trade.

Other options that I have used with mixed success is to shade the mushrooms or blow them with a power head. This will sometimes cause the mushroom to loosen it's grip to the rock, making it easier to peel off.

Here's an old picture of my tank with my mushroom plague...

I agree with Glaudds...just chip a small piece of rock where the mushroom is attached. I've used wire cutters and was able to easily clip off little pieces of live rock with shrooms on them. Was easy. Will be especially easy for you since you only have 4 pieces.
