In a couple months I will need to replace my metal halides and was wondering what the best kind of 250 watt 14K bulb there is? I've heard Hamilton is good but any other ideas?

I liked the Hamilton as well, but I like the Phoenix 14K a little better. Both are good for the price.

Are Phoenix bulbs double ended because I need a bulb that is single ended?

Phoenix are double ended(very nice bulb at about $60.00) If your looking for a nice SE look at the aquaconnect 14K but your talking about $120.00 a bulb and last about 9 months.

Ushio 14,000K, hard to beat the output, and more actinic than any other halide made.

whoa whoa wait .. we need to know what your preference is. Blue tank? Shallow look? High noon look? Max growth? Do you supplement actinics? Not all 14K's are the same.

These are what I've used (Icecap ballast)

14K Iwasaki - crisp white. No blue, no yellow. WHITE.
14K Phoenix - Blue. Forget every other color.
14K Ushio - crisp white with very strong spike in the 420nm
14K Gman (Coral) Almost similar to the 14K ushio, slightly dimmer IMO

Yeah, i run 150w Phoenix 14k, and it is really blue. Blue enough make your corals do the actinic glow
