I am currently building a 58 gallon oceanic reef. I am still undecided about a skimmer. I currently have a etss reef devil on my fowlr. It is okay but a little tempermental. I have been looking at several types of skimmers and need some info on beckett style skimmers pros and cons. Any info would be great.

On a 58g a beckett is overkill and you need a fairly large pump. A needle wheel is probably a better choice and will save on your electric bill-

Becketts can be as temperamental as downdrafts. I would also suggest looking into a Needle wheel skimmer. Becketts are great performing skimmers but the require high energy pressure rated pumps, sensitive to oils, loud and usually requires babysitting.

would they be louder than my etss reef devil?

Are you talking about becketts or NW?

NW will most likely be quieter, becketts will be louder[how much louder really depends on pump]

I 3nd a NW skimmer for a tank your size.

i would agree with all, nw is the way to go for most any system anymore. and you can find a slew of skimmers that would work in you system just fine. msx 160, reef octopus nw150, tunze 9010, and DAS ex-1, check into these they are all good skimmers.

I would just get a skimmer rated for a 100 gallon tank or less

needlewheel is easy if you get a quality skimmer

I ran a kz skimmer on my 58 and it was a beckett
