How do these LPS grow?

I have a Favites Pentagonia and I am wondering how it grows. It seems to be encrusting the rock I glued it to, but does it actually grow bigger?

I also have this Acan Lord frag. How will it grow out?

they form a skeleton which encrusts over the rock.

Is it neccesary to have the rock or will they expand on sand as well?

If their skeleton has nothing to encrust onto then they wall just grow on their skeleton. (skeleton will grow off the rock) they are fine in the sand.
