What is a recirculating skimmer?

What is a recirculating skimmer and how does it work? I am looking for a skimmer for the sump of the new 75 gal I will be getting tuesday. Should I be looking for this type of skimmer?

recurculating skimmers means the main pump basically takes water from the skimmer body and blows it back into the skimmer thus equals more contact time. these types of skimmers will also need an extra pump to feed the skimmer.

IMO I like recurulating skimmers but I have also had good luck with regular needle wheel's. the main thing I liked about the reculating skimmers is the can be used outside the sump.

Thanks for the response. Can you recommend a skimmer for a 75 gallon? I've been looking at octopus and turboflotor. Any others in this price/performance catagory?

Agreed. However a feed pump isn't always necessary. There are successful mods where a large skimmer is fed water directly from the outlet of the overflow.

from what I have read, octo's seem to get very good results and with a few mods they can be even better. before I ended up getting my reefmania skimmer (awesome skimmers BTW) I was looking at getting the Octopus Extreme 160
Protein Skimmer. not a recurlating skimmer but a great skimmer. as for a recurulating skimmer check out the Octopus DNW-200.
