I have a trochus that I bought a week ago. For the first few days its been eating well. Then 2 days ago it stopped moving and withdrew almost completely into it's shell. I know its alive as I just prodded at it, but its still not moving and withdrawn almost completely into the shell. Is it dying? How can I tell if a snail is dead? TIA

They tend to need steady acclimation; just throwing them in the tank can mean a slow die-off over several weeks.

A dead snail smells.

If you have bristle worms (as most of us do), when something dies, they all start sticking their heads out of their holes to find the dead critter.

If it dies, it shouldn't really mess up your tank and the scavengers will appreciate it.

Hope it makes it. Sometimes, snails don't move for a few days.

Best of luck,

Roy
