Amen, it has been too long!!

Maybe Marc POISONED Evan with a food test and Marc has him in his tank - being devoured by crabs!?

Or some mutagenic compound gave Even gills and he is having to relearn to speak:eek1:

Bring back REEFCAST! :D

Marc ,

You need to give up on Evan and just do Reefcast with guests and guest hosts. every 9 months Evan comes back states " hes sorry" Goes hard core for about 15 minutes then takes a break for another 9 months.... Pretty inconsistant " expert " at best.

Phil, what does it mean when you type "back" in quotes?

The quotes were an ilusion to the fact that this is not a real place. Therefore he never really "left", and can not technically have returned since reef central is not a physical place than can be left or returned to. In fact it sounds like he is just leaving his original physical domicile, so perhaps "goodby" is in order. But since I've never actually met him, and live 3,000 miles away does it really matter and is any of this really necessary?

Or maybe I was just really tired and need to go to bed instead of surfing RC that night :p

Fortunately for you, you have a 75 gallon tank for them to live in. I've gone through 3, all ate all the calurpa then died after about 3 weeks in my 29g display.

Must be the same strain that is taking over California's waters.

Update: MAJOR tank surgery last night to get rid of the calurpa once and for all. The fiance and I took out a 6 gallon bucket worth of the stuff off the rock and now cooking the rock in total darkness until it is all dead.

Pics and more details to come (I was up late doing it and my camera's batteries died prior to posting pics).

Hey Quicksilver, I feel your pain on the whole caulerpa thing. I went through the same thing in my 110G. I was starting to get a little bit of a handle on it by cleaning my skimmer at least every other day and manual extraction 2-3 times a week. I finally got a lavender tang that devours the stuff though. I think cooking your rock is the best way to go without a tank big enough to sustain a fish that will eat it, hovever, I too tried to kill it off by light starvation and after 6 weeks in darkenss it still came back. You might want to consider pouring boiling water over the rock or some other way to kill the caulerpa before re-cooking the rock, then just pick up a couple small pieces of good rock to reseed your existing rock.

The big problem is that the roots and fine stems get into the heart of the rock. I haven't done it yet but I'm thinking of pulling a rock that has caulerpa on it and breaking it open to see how invasive it really is.

I would think boiling or freezing should kill it off deep down.

Sucks you're still having the issues with the calurpa then I'd say get a small yellow tang. Stop feeding your fish the calurpa from the fugium and just try to keep something like the nori or misc. to keep the fish happy until it gets too big.

I fed the tang i use to have the calurpa and he loved it. Perhaps you can get your lfs to feed calurpa to the tangs they have in the tank and see which take then go with that fish?

I had a piece that I let dry out for several days and that was enough to kill it off completely.:D

Be sure to slip the preacher an extra $100 to include in her vows "...And never complain about his reef tank or the time and money involved in maintaining it..."

Yeah, I'm amazed how long that crap can survive in a dormant state. It goes clear, almost vanishes and then comes back. I'm think of cooking the rock for 4-6 months :( I don't know what else to do, I have literally tried every single thing.

I don't want to boil or dry out the rock, it won't be live rock then. If I just wait to get a bigger tank I can maintain a tang or rabbit fish that can constantly control it.

Hey Evan, did you charge your battery yet? Let's see some pictures of the carnage.

I called you and left a voice mail this afternoon.

I wish I knew something to help but I don't.

I pick that darn stuff out of my nano tank almost daily with a long pair of tweezers. :(

i want to say adding the caulerpa into the fuge and letting it go wild in there will help, but if i recall correctly, your caulerpa started in your fuge and crept its way into the display right?

when my last tank started growing caulerpa thats what i did. the fuge was greater in volume than the main tank itself, but it worked! :D not only did i do that with the caulerpa, but i did it with the dictyota growing in the same tank.

somewhere in the middle of this thread before the split i posted pictures of handfulls of algae. thats just a small amount of what i had growing in the fuge that was supporting my little 10g

ide say you have the right idea though. cook the heck out of those rocks to kill off the remaining weeds. then on the new tank use cheato or something?

if that doesnt work just buy new rocks!

It's happening to me too. It started by coming in on one tiny little frag and I could barely see a spot of green. Now I'm pulling it off rocks weekly.

I don't have a fuge or sump - it's all a small display but this stuff is killing me.

What Chrismunn said makes a lot of sense, and it that doesn't work, i'd say go with baking the LR you have or getting some fresh LR, because it's not going away. I don't know how sane that sounds, but that's the only other option i see if nothing else works...

Got the batteries changed yet?

i think more importantly it should be noted that something is feeding the algae. obviously light is a big factor, but exsessive nutrients plays the larger role here. thats something that we all already know about, and a gigantic part of the hobby is geared toward adressing.

you dont have a dirty tank now do you evan? did you forget to mention that you only do bi-monthly water changes of only 5% ;) j/k

in any case it seem like this is some super strain like someone mentioned before, or else it probably wouldnt be an issue. im still amazed that it started in the fuge, filled that completely full and spilled over into the display. that means that there has to be something feeding it? my guess would be that if evan does in fact keep a clean tank, which im confident he does, then the rocks are probably packed full of crud and are continually leaching that crud back into the tank. that something i dont really know anything about, but if it is the case then evan's already on the right track by cooking those rocks.

i love that you agree with me kellsindell, :D but when you consider the fact that it started in the fuge and then entered the display secondary, then there's no way my idea would work.

Chrismunn, macro algae's and in my case turf algae and be a real pain in small tanks no matter how clean, since most of the fish and organizms that normally feed on them are too big. For example, I've tried to introduce the green turf algae that covers my nano into my 50 gal to help control other nusiance algae. No luck, my yellow tang picked that rock clean overnight. Same situation with other macros, I've tried introducing to the 50 gal, and the tang gobbles them up. That's why we have refugiums. Too bad a tang is way to big for a 20 gal in my case, or 29 in Evan's case.

exactly my point. in a good situation you can simply put an aggresive nutrient exporting macro like caulerpa into the fuge, and that solves that. thats what ive done in my 14g bc but i used cheato. in evans case i dont even nkow whats going on? ide have to look back somewhere before the split, but i remember him having caulerpa in the fuge and then leaving town for a few days returning to an entire tank full of the stuff?

if you have a fuge full of macro and the stuff still grows in the display, then what?

DheereCrossing

...waiting for someone to answer... I've got the same thing going on.

I was saying get rid of the calurpa altogether. it's not like he has a tang or foxface that wants that as it's main diet.

Cook the live rock in the fuge and display get some new rocks in there and then use cheato and hope it'll take the excess nutrients out strangling the the calurpa. I'm surprised the stuff hasn't gone sexual already...

Evan do you have any corals left? pic updates?
