I've got a 550g Reef Tank. The candy cane corals are having the flesh fall off their heads. The flesh does not die for 1-2 weeks. The other problem is montipora corals don't live more than a week. Calcium is 430ppm, Alkalinity is 8.9 dKh, Magnessium is good. Tank is skimmed with a Deltec Skimmer and Maintains a temp of 80 with a chiller. The lighting is 3- 400 Watt Mogul Metal Halides 14000K and 4-250 Watt HQI 20000K. Any ideas on what could be causing this. Thanks.

When you say MG is good what is it ? 1200,1300,1400??? How old are your test kits? What is the Nitrates, ammonia and,Salt level etc.?

How close to all that light are the effected corals?

Magnessium is 1390, salinty is 1.025, No Ammonia, Less than 5 ppm Nitrate. Phosphates less than .003. I'm thinking it is some sort of predation but I can't see anything on the corals. The candy canes loose their flesh from the base and then they float around.

Have you tried dipping them with a Coral dip and/or Interceptor? What's the PH any swings in PH?

check the flow on the candy - i have found they will start to do the polyp bailout thing if they are getting to much flow
but then again that doesn't explain the monti problem so....

I've tried a iodine coral dip, but it doesn't seem to have an impact. The pH fluctuates from about 8.2 during the day down to 8.0-8.1 at night. The tank does have about 8000 gph water flow, but the candy canes are in all different locations, some with very little flow. Everything was fine for the first 6-7 months, then the montipora started dying, after they were all gone it seemed the candy canes were next on the menu. I have not tried Interceptor yet, but it will probably be next on my list.
