I downloaded the DIY info on how to make your own "live" rock and it explained that you must cure it for about 4 - 5 weeks. My question is can I cure it in a new tank??

I would not as you will proabably want to do at least one 100%
water change and why have all the mess in your new tank

I would use a trash can from walmart

I too would not. I made about 70#. Used a large rubbermaid trash can. Changed the water about every two weeks, and it took about 12 weeks to get the alk down. I then added a full salt change to the can because I read that there could be a spike in the alk. Sure enough, there was. Second salt change and ph and alk held at good levels. BTW, my rock came out great, and after almost a year in the tank you can not tell it apart from the natural rock.
