who ever has HAD a niger trigger, blue tang, lionfish chime in!!

hi guys.... if you YOUTUBE niger trigger you'll notice everyone has them in 30-100 gallon tanks! everyone is diferent some books say minimum aquarium is 75 some 90 some 125

some say they wont eat inverts or corral, some say theyll eat other fish, stc...

basically its a HIT or miss.

i WANT a trigger, but im going with soft corrals...

if youve had a trigger please tell me your experiences, and has anyone had luck having one in a 90 gallon, or even in a reef tank?

i really want one but for my 90 im thinking of 5 or 6 of the following...

2-clowns
1-mandarinian goby
1-dwarf lionfish
1-blue tang
1-rabbit fish
1-niger trigger
1-foxface
-1 yellow tang
1-fire angel

can someone also help me out by suggesting about 5 of these?

i have reaserched and all...

i know a 90 isnt HUGE, but ive seen triggers in smaller tanks, and hapily swimming. also ive seen one that has been in a tank for 4 1/2 years and the dude is maybe 5"s.

if it outgrows the tank which it will by that time i will just upgrade to a 200+

i know the blue hippo tang gets big too, which im ok with transfering later...

niger triggers get bigger than hippo tangs.. One in a tank for 4 1/2 yrs. is probably stunted. A buddy i work with had 2 in his 230g and 1 got to 17" other 14 1/2". A small one would be okay in a 90 for a while but def not for a couple of yrs.

flame angels are known to pick at corals. Some say hit or miss but in my experience its a matter of time. Other than that i don't forsee anything too wrong. Foxface and tang maybe to big together for a 90

so no angel fish, or foxface then???

so other than the trigger getting too big in some years even if its 2 years im sure ill save up for an awesome 200+

i meant the yellow and the foxface may be too big together ( 90 being borderline for a yellow tang alone ) Not years with the niger, Year. Unless its tiny but i wouldn't keep him in there any longer than that. They also eat alot which in turn produces alot of waste ( which you will have to get out through skimming and frequent water changes )

also the manderine can't go in for 6-12 months depending on amount of live rock and a refugium. they are very demanding in terms of feeding.

like i said, my personal sizes..Not everyone goes by rules and they stick whatever fish in whatever tank and sometimes all is well. Seeing my yellow tang freak out from time to time lets me know i will be upgrading yet again sooner then later. I guess he has gotton quite large ( At least 6-7 inch including tail ) and i have a pic of one somewhere almost the size of a dinner plate!
Imagin trying to keep that in my 80 lol

The male triggers are bad. they get territoral and are more pron to pick at corals and fish. I think you should do the 2 clowns(get large) lion, yellow tang, and mabey one more. You will be fine with that. Im getting that same list but add in a mintais grouper.

so for a niger i should get a female? the clowns will be medium, and the trigger and tiny lion abou 2"s as well..

so i guess the niger, clowns, goby, lion, and blue tang will be enough...

IMO, you should only get what your tank can hold long term. You say that in a couple of years you'll save up for a 200+, but you never know what can happen in that time period. You may have to spend money on something else you need, not raise enough money in time to put the fish in a bigger tank, or just loose interest in the hobby all together and let the fish suffer because of it.

I have this 6" guy in a mixed reef, with clams, iverts, lps, sps, softies etc. it;s the tird one i have owned without a single incident(except bump checking my finger..creepy but no damage done).

i heard the blue jaw ones are the least agressive and most reef safe. then the niger. and then the picaso, then the mean clown trigger..

as for that other reply, i am not cruel and wouldnt do that if i was tired of it or had no money i could send it back to the lfs to hold or have.

im 21 and still living with the rents..

i know in a year or 2 i will have moved out to my own place which i could then buy a 200+ aquarium in which i could have the trigger and other triggers or more agressive fish, and keep my 90 a reef tank...

my concern is trigger relationship in a reef tank. with corals and inverts and other fish specifically the ones mentioned in my list.

as for the size when the time comes i will change him. my friends has been in a 55 by himself with lr for over 4 years and hes only 6"s

i believe its cuz of the small tank, cuz in the ocean they can hit 12-18 inches

above doesn't make it right or humane on the fish. Never keep a fish in too small of a tank, Perfect example is we have a purple tang at the store i work in that came from someone with a 40g, the tang is only 5 inch and he isn't getting any bigger. He is stunted and lost some fins and gained an arched spine because of it. He is now in the 460g

Niger triggers have gotten to 18'' in home aquaia and much bigger in the wild. Piccaso triggers are NOT reef safe and very aqqgressive..

yeah i knew this. but like i said when he gets lets say 6"s he will be moved to a bigger tank. sorry to hear about that stuned fish..

i wont let it happen to mine, but a 2" trigger to get 6" will take atleast a year...

also, on the blue jaw. They are VERY active, if you don't like non stop motion all across your tank they are not for you. I got mine from somebody who disliked it only for that reason.

i have a hawaiin black trigger in my 180g reef..
hes fine in there but im already looking for bigger tank for him and hes about 5"...
triggers in general are pretty agressive.
and just because youve seen it done by a friend etc, doesnt mean its ethical nor OK.

again guys im not saying its ethical. i mean if you think about it having any animal caged is unethical. i LOVE triggers cuz they swim alot. my fav is the niger one. the picaso and clown are out of the question for i want soft corals and inverts...

im not farmiliar with the hawaiian trigger but a 5" fish in a 180 gallon aquarium seems fine to me...

Pink tail is worth mentioning, I've never seen a niger 14" but wow! Any triggers in the Xanthichthys genus are "reef safe" if you want to call them that but size can be an issue
