Limiting Mag 7 flow for ATO

I have mag 7 and would like to use it for ATO, head is about 6 feet. I would like to limit the flow to about 1 gallon per minute or less.

Any cons if I use ball or gate valve on Mag 7?

Idealy I would like a pump that can pump between 1 to 5 gallons per hour.

BTW: I would love to get Reef-Filler 1000 but it is little pricy.

I wouldn't use a Mag pump for ATO, they don't do well with the ON/OFF requirements...I used a Mag 3 and it would just cavitate after awhile.

Along with float switch, I plan to have it on timer so that it turns on once or twice in 24 hours.

I also use a MaxiJet 1200. It has worked flawlessly for 8 months now.
