Couple of questions regarding these two species.

First is, would a group of 1-1 1/2" Bartlett's (5-7) be ok in a 40 gallon until they are able to grow out a bit, maybe a year at most I would assume. I don't want to throw them in my 180 with much larger fish and have them severely stressed.

Also, in a 180 would it be big enough to have both Bartlett's and Lyretails?

don't know about Bartletts, but I do remember reading that Lyretails require a LOT of feeding, and that it's not uncommon for them to starve in our tanks, so if you go that route, be prepared to transport nutrients like mad.

What he said.

Putting them in the 180g is probably a better solution. What other fish are in there now?

In the 180 or the 40?

The fish I am most worried about are my maroon and gold clowns. They are not too receptive to new fish, especially smaller fish they can bully.

The other that I run into problems with is actually a Royal Gramma. He's also prone to picking on smaller fish.

I know, not the most fierce of fish. But all three have managed to wreak havoc at times. It may be smart to wait for the local shop to get larger in. He thought it'd be a few months. Or order online.
