View Full Version : pH and ORP, how are they related?

I know they are related, but how are they related. When the pH increases, the orp goes down, and vise versa. So my question, when i am running a tank at a pH of 8.1 and the ORP is 410, and the pH increases to a pH of 8.4 and the ORP goes down to 390, is the 390 a false reading or is the ORP actually higher. What i am worried about is to high of a ORP associated with a high pH.

The H+ Ion will effect other ions in the water.

Randy explains is here:

Good Luck!

No, there is not need to worry, unless that ORP is achieved buy adding or using things like ozone. In short, as pH goes down ORP goes up and vise-versa. As H+ increases ORP increase. And a lower pH has more H+. A pH of 2 = 1/100 of a mole and a pH of 3 = 1/1,000 . And 1/100 is more than 1/1,000.

I dose 50 mG of ozone through my skimmer. It is controlled by my neptune. I was unsure that if the high pH gives a false reading of ORP so in this case the ORP would actually be higher then reported. That does not seem to be the case. Thanks so much for the replies.

Then you are fine with those ORP ozone readings;) If I look at the probable net gals of water for your tank 50 mg is about perfect. Make sure you run that ozonated water through carbon before it goes into the tank. You want to be safe from generated ozone oxidants like Broamine.

every time i run carbon on the out put the carbon gets pulverized and gets spread all throughout the aquarium. I have only tried one method, and thats a filter sock over the output of the skimmer. Is there a better way? i have been running it this way for over a year and it has always made me nervous. I do run a separate carbon reactor but it is not associated with the skimmer. Its just a phosban 150 loaded with carbon.

Make or get a overflow box that you can hang on the sump or even a bucket with legs. Drill the bottom with a bunch of 1/4 holes so it looks like a peg-board. Fill a sock or mes bag (better) with carbon and put it in the box/bucket so it is 2/3 full. And make the box big enough so it does not overflow.

I will give that a try, thanks so much.
