After searching through 18 pages I'm wondering you guys could give me some advice on stocking, specifically a Purple Tang.

I have a 110 Gallon (48x18x30) with a previously established 2" Tomini Tang and 2" Occi Clown.

Would a Purple Tang be alright in a tank this size?

I was planning on adding a Solar Wrasse and Midas Blenny. Hoping for 1 more, possibly 2 including the Purple Tang, for a total of 6 or 7 fish.

I have read that Purples are aggressive. Is this only at full adult sizes, or throughout life?
Also picked up on adding the Purple last but would the Solar, Midas or smaller fish unlike the body shape of the Purple be alright if the Purple is already pre-establish?

Any advice, info, opinions etc. are welcome!

I think if you got a small one, it would work. I have mine with a solar wrasse, never been a problem. He's actually only been aggresive towards other tangs. You might see some problems with the Tomini, as mine was quick to beat up my 1 inch long kole, however mine is very large (7+inches). Good luck!

Thanks for the input.

The Purple I've been eyeing is 3" at most so I'm hoping with similar size, new guy on the block and different shape/genus, it will work out.

Is a 110 with the above dimensions adequate swimming space for his whole life?

If you've ever seen a large purple tang (and I'm not suggesting you haven't,) it would be pretty clear that a 4 foot tank is not suitable to this active, often aggressive fish. Think lateral swimming space and not total tank volume. The fact that you're even asking shows you care enough to be concerned. I personally wouldn't attempt one for the long haul in anything less than a 125.

Thank you Jerry.
I have not seen a mature Purple Tang in person, wish I had.
I know dimensions are more important then total volume.
(Wish I would have upgraded to a 5'er ^.^)
I appreciate the help and will revert to a Yellow Tang!

Yes, a yellow tang would be a much better choice for your tank size.

It's nice you though of the fish. So many post that the fish they want is small now, they are going to upgrade, etc. to justify getting a fish they want.

I have been told that you want to place all your tangs in the tank at the same time if possible. I have a Purple, Sailfin, and Naso in a 210 gallon, and they seem OK with a bit of sparring, but no injuries so far.

You should be fine, as long as the Xanthurum is the last Zebrasoma added to the display.
