I would like to see pics of either of these angels in your aquariums and experiences you had with the fish.....getting them to eat, reef safe (if not, which corals were picked on), etc....

Hey fittiger, check out the cover of this months Reefkeeping mag!

I've had them both-inluding the one on the cover of RK.
Venustus much easier than multi IME.

Both as reef safe as Centropyge can be.

In my experience with P.multifasciatus, I've found:

-They do not ship well.
-Picky about food
-Very stubborn, can go on hunger strikes until death.

Find a specimen that is eating beforehand and make sure you have plenty of LR to sustain it for grazing. Even if eating in one tank when moving to another they can refuse to eat in the new system. I'd also suggest picking up a variety of foods to offer, before bringing the animal home to be able to offer it a variety of foods. They take some training...

HTH and good luck. It's a beautiful fish.

I strongly believe getting healthy specimen is the key for long term success.

Oops. Sorry, got ahead of myself after seeing multi.

Almost got the multibarred angel 6-7 weeks back but but it didn't get shipped. Looking forward to getting one when I get the 125g up and running.

gasman059, Nice fish!!!

Any other tips on getting these bad boys to eat?

Besides making sure they eat at the store you buy them from?

I noticed that mine wanted nothing to do with any foods with Garlic in it, and was a LR and LS "picker" rather than eating out of the water column.

Thanks for the comments.....and pics flameangel88.

Stunreefer - I've actually never had much luck with any of the angels I've kept getting them to eat garlic enhance food.

Would anyone recommend a small red sea regal over the multi or venustus? These are the one's I'm focusing on to add first to my tank. I previously had a potters that lived for 1.5yrs and died from an ich outbreak caused by a newly added tang. I'm done with tangs. The only fish I currently have is a spotted mandarin, so essentially this will be the first fish added to my tank since May. I may just go for another potters.

I don't know if this is allowed here so mods please delete this section if not, but could someone pm (I don't think this kind of response is allowed in this forum) me any information on ordering angels, especially touchy ones, from reefhotspot?

Flameangel88 or anyone else......I'm really tempted to get rid of my corals and do a tank similar to yours. I much prefer fish, especially angels, butterflies and wrasses (in that order) to corals, but the corals just make the tank look nice. I'd be interest to see some tanks with some nice macroalgaes/grasses as filler in stead of corals.....I assume angels would do fine in this type of environment.

venusta and multibars are almost identical in care. IME, both are OK shippers. I have more experience with multibars specifically from the Marshalls. they always eat and do very well from the tiny nickel size ones to the big 3" ones. If they come from Indo or the Philippines they have a poor track record, either because of the collection process or the poor handling. It is difficult to know where they are coming from once they land at a LFS but if your LFS has any Hawaii connections the ones coming from there would be 99% from Marshalls.

Now that I see you've a 75g...this is what my 75g looked like before upgrading to the 180g.

Do your angels ever spawn?

Perfect timing on this thread, as I've been considering adding a multifasciatus to my tank. Any thoughts on the "reef safeness" of these guys with LPS and SPS?

My venustus picked at SPS here and there but nothing devastating. It did cause less PE during the day though. It never touched LPS, and seemed to be "afraid" of my monster elegance, lol. I noticed very similar things in the past with the multifaciatus coral wise.

Not yet but I think a pair started to form.

Here's my Multifasciatus I just had him picked up for me today. Eating spectrum pellets and mysis in QT and ate at the LFS in the little 6x6 holding tank. Fingers crossed on his "reef-safeness," I guess as long as he leaves my gorgonians alone, the polyps are his...

Good to know. I'm about 95% sure I'm going to try a multi. The plan is (assuming I can find a healthy specimen) to add it on the Thursday Friday before a long weekend so I have a couple days to observe it and take it back to the LFS if necessary.

Looks great and eating as well, good find! I'm interested to hear how it behaves once it makes it into the display

Thanks. My brother found him at a LFS in South Florida. I've been looking for some fish on my stocklist for some time now so I've had him looking down there too. But he came across the Muti, and I told him to see how he eats, and he ate good at the LFS. So I've got to make some changes to the list now lol.

Not sure if you guys can tell, but he's not very big at all, maybe 1.5" total. I think this adds to why he's been as good as he is, so fast. Willing to adapt, versus the usual Multi's I found in research that usually come in around 3"-4".

Bringing this thread back from the dead :D

I've had my multi for about a week and so far so good. He is readily eating frozen mysis, brine, angel formula, and even flake. He hasn't shown any interest in corals yet either, but he has been picking bits of sponge and micro algae off the rock.
