This new ORA coral was just released late today. Here's the description and picture they e-mailed me. (I am a LFS so this is how I get the e-mails)

This is word for word of what they e-mailed me:

ORA Red Planet tabling Acropora! This has been our most anticipated release of the year. The coral is truly stellar and sure to be the talk of the town. It is predominantly vivid red with how pink tips and a metallic green base. fragments of this coral closely resemble what most might call a Acropora millepora or prostrata but it grows into a tightly spaced, flat topped, true table coral as it matures.

We have been working with this particular strain for over two years. We started with a single tiny fragment obtained from a hobbyist in Europe. We are truly proud to finally release this one.

The Red Planet Table displays excellent growth and color under a wide variety of lighting conditions and has proven to be one of our hardiest corals. You truly must see it to believe it. You can be sure that your customers will be anxiously awaiting this acro's arrival so you might want to go ahead and start your waiting list.

that pic isnt of red planet...

the original name was crimson clover until they changed the name last minute.

^^^^hmm that picture looks a lot like the ATL christmas mirabilis. Are you saying your coral is different then the one in the original post?

CMcNeil
08/01/2008, 09:38 PM
i cant seem to see any photobucket pictures or log in to post my pic,but mine was labeled crimson on the bag and it does look like the ATL mirabilis to me.mine doesnt look like the pic of the "red planet"from ORA but it is small so hard to say what it really looks like.

CMcNeil
08/01/2008, 10:00 PM
ok went to a different computer and now photobucket works,i do believe it is the same as the original pic just small so the red isnt so pronounced.whatever the name is really doesnt matter to me,this is "THE NICEST CORAL" to come out of ORA in a while.i was very happy with the plasma and pearlberry but this thing is a step above those.

wow , I'm glad I saw these pics before I commit to buy this coral at my LFS. It look so much like the ATL mirabilis it's not even funny. As nice as this is I'm going to have to pass as it's just way to close to the ATL christmas which I already have. Now, If I had a larger tank maybe I'd think differently haha.

I had a coral years ago from Reefstuff.com (now soutassaltwater.com) that they called Acropora anthocercis.
This is the best picture I have of mine when I had it.

Not sure, but it looks like the coral in the first post, and grows into a nice red table coral. soutas sells pretty nice sized frags of them for $25.

I agree with RENDO it looks like a Acropora anthocercis mine has similar colors to the ORA one I got it froma local TOTM reefer in the area. I am just going to wait how the ORA colors up for other reefers before I pull the trigger. It has the same tabling growth as pictured in ORA mother colony and coralite and polyp structure.

Got my Red Planet today, along with Purple Plasma, Pearlberry, Hawkins Blue Echinata, and Verde Acropora.

That Verde is really hairy, big time polyp extension.

I picked up the Red Planet frag still in the ORA bag, and it was labeled "Mars," for Red Planet, I guess.

Bought one today. When I got home after a 2 hour car ride, the polyps were out in the bag. I put it in a container for inspection and they came right back out and stayed out as I rolled it around. Within an hour, the polyps were fully extended. This coral is amazing.

It is amazing and definitely amazingly similar to the ATL Christmas mirabilis. The word is that this coral is super tough; so if that's the case it not only shares the same visual appearance as the ATL mirablis, but also it's hardiness as well. Also, seems ORA is releasing corals that are very much the same as other, popular "named" corals. Tubs horrida/puple plasma is another example.

ATL mirabilis(in front):

Im still skeptical about it holding such a strong green base. I dont know if any of you guys have seen pics of the Pearlberry mother colony, but most of the frag pics are waaaay brighter and better looking, but the mother still has nice blue tips with more of a greenish base than you usually see, yet lacks the fading effect from purple to blue to light blue. The pic released for this guy shows just a bit of green visible at the base of the mother colony, but I suspect it wont be throughtout the colony as it is in the frag. I think it will look similar to Leishman coral he posted above, with a bit more green between coralites and at the base. Either way Im very happy with my most recent ORA purchase :)

That's why when my colony died (details here (http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=13098802#post13098802) ) I was not concerned as i had a frag in the frag tank that survived (5"x3") and that every reefer in DC/MD/VA has this coral in their tank. The mother was ~16"x14" for the lower level, and a split upper level roughly 14"x7".

Marc - I received the Hyacinthus pictured above from Leishman. That coral is no doubt similar to the ORA Red Planet. I am not 100% sure if they are the same.

I have the ORA Red Planet. I've actually had it for some time now. (Got it before the release). It has kept it's color and grows at a decent rate. I just hope that it will continue to keep the green within the branches as it grows out.

Leishman

My green was there with 10k and new actinics. As the actinics got old, I lost the green. I now run 20k Radiums w/T5 ATI blue+ bulbs. Who knows what color that will bring.

You can see the green in this old pic

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a16/p96531/P20401181.jpg

but not in the one taken a few days before it died

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a16/p96531/1-2.jpg

And NO signs of green (or red) here...

I had a coral years ago from Reefstuff.com (now soutassaltwater.com) that they called Acropora anthocercis.
This is the best picture I have of mine when I had it.
http://fishman.smugmug.com/photos/63015530_79MbP-L.jpg
and a top down picture of it...
http://fishman.smugmug.com/photos/63654606_yPBF8-L-1.jpg

Not sure, but it looks like the coral in the first post, and grows into a nice red table coral. soutas sells pretty nice sized frags of them for $25.

Yup. Anthocercis it could be. I'm pretty sure yours is as is this

<a href="http://s8.photobucket.com/albums/a12/ryanreeves/?action=view&current=pink_table.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a12/ryanreeves/pink_table.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Certainly with natural sunlight you would expect more of a dull coloration as most of their corals display out of the vats. That could give you a green base, but who knows.

When people have have a decent one, do they support it alot....or only for things you could not get cheaper somewhere else? Might be why they went belley-up. This is one big reason why people do not see a lot of them still around. To save a few $$ people will get all the information and the little things they need from them, but when big purchases come along, (to save $5 on a $200 item) they will buy online from a vendor that has no experience or store to support. Do gyms give away lessons? Do people work for free? Why cannot a store charge a little more than 10% markup, $40 on a $400 item. I could not even do that.

Sorry to rant and rave, but bugs me and hurts when people post this stuff. Would like to get some of these in to a LFS but mine is gone now due to things like this. Eric would you pay the $89 going rate for this coral in my old store when it was there, or just get those $1.50 snails? Reason why more LFS close every year, hard to stay open and make very little profit when other business are making 40,50 and more % profit to stay open.

Love this thread, just hurt to see this statement

I hear you 100% man. It wasn't your fault that they crashed so don't take it so hard. There obviously needs to be a bigger "member" base for profit to be made IMO. There aren't that many people in SF that did salt water let along pay $89 for a coral like this. and YES I would pay $89 bucks for this or pay for a frag. In this hobby you need to have a decent pocket book or you need to DIY and frag stuff and around here there isn't that much $$. IF I had the money or was in the market for this coral YES I would buy it. I've done it before.

Try the gym business when you are selling space and not even a product. People don't see that you have any money in anything. Just put some equipment in a room and you have a gym...right :rolleye1: And yes they do steal lessons or buy supplements online when I talk to them about them in the store unfortunately it is part of my biz. And we don't get to mark stuff up much at all. Make pennies on the dollar.

On to our regularly scheduled program.

BTW, he still has a larger piece though with colors washed out. PM me if any one is interested.

I just picked mine up today. $45 for it. The owner has had it for over a week but the store is new and most seasoned LFS vets have yet to check out this new LFS so basically I got lucky. :)

I am curious what their actual price is for it?

I saw 2 of these at a LFS...they wanted $150 for each one! One was already sold and they will probably not have a problem selling the other one. They were selling the Hawkins ORA for $200 when they came out and were getting that price! This kind of money is a drop in the bucket for people in high rent districts.

thats the truth.if you live in N.Y. city of like Philly the money is a different denomination then the poorer more rural areas.the pet stores where i live sell stuff a bit cheaper than LA but they usually dont get ora stuff in or if they get it in it is sold fast. The stuff that stays at the LFS for a few weeks usually ends up being so stressed it is not worth half of the regular retail.

I got mine today. It small though...like 3/4" straight branch with no side branching. Kinda lame ORA even shipped this to my LFS, when compaired to Insains I feel angry.

Its very cool though and should grow fast, I paid 59.99 -10% for being a good customer...so about 54. I also bought a marshall islands ORA peice came on a white ORA plug, can they get more ugly plugs while they are at it.

Just snagged the last one from liveaquaria.com. Someone beat me to my first pick outta the 2 I saw. Ordered a nice ORA Verde Acropora, ORA Hawkins Blue Echinata, ORA Pearl Berry Acropora, from Diver's Den also. Man those things went fast. There was half a page of ORA stuff when I got there. By the time I completed my order 3/4 of it was gone. I'll post pics once I have it and it's settled in.

Way to go Stephen! I love my pearlberry! I just got the red planet over the week-end and it has some amazing polyp extension. I got lucky and got mine from my LFS, he was getting $96 bucks for the red planet. I was able to get it for half price.

StephenInVa-Sorry, that was me. I was checking out the Divers Den and thought they were running a little low on the new ORA stuff. I hit refresh and there they were. I was also looking for a Phil's Granulosa which I also jumped on but no purple Plasma. :(

Both were nice pieces but you definitely got the better of the two. lol. I was amazed how fast it went. I went to grab my wallet and the thing was gone. Jumped right on the other though. I was eying that purple plasma also. Figured I'd spent enough for the week on corals though.

Here's the ones I got. Hope it's cool to post the pics. If not... I'll understand if they are taken down.

I wish I had a LFS that carried ORA stuff. The closest shop that does is over an hour away. It's a great shop but after driving up there I figure I waste the $35.99 for shipping in gas. Didn't like the idea of a waiting list either. I'm too impatient. :) He's got a great selection though and I visit probably way too much. lol

On a side note I ordered 3 ORA frags from another online vendor. Another frag of red planet, a nathans green, and a blue mille. Got an email and call today saying the two mille's were shipped but the red planet was out of stock. I'll have to call in the morning and ask for a credit now.

O.K., I'm getting terrific polyp extension on this. But tonight I was looking at it and other corals in my tank, and I realized how much it looks like my Rose Milli, which I also like, it's just not one of my favorites. Now I'm wondering if I'm going to be disappointed with it or if I should give it more time since I've not had a tabling acro before.

I've been watching divers den since this thread popped up since I have a hard time getting to my fav LFS because of scheduling...and they're closed on sundays. I just snatched the one in the divers den about an hour ago. Paid they're 89.99 and shipping...sucks.

I've noticed in the past couple weeks since I've been watching that some of their corals in the divers den have dropped 10 bucks in price. Summer electricity and gas prices seem to be dropping the price since people aren't so willing to dish out 130 bucks for a frag. At least I like to think we play a part in driving down the price :)

Hey gang, I have a question about the red planet. This is the first tabling acro I've had. I asked my lfs what a tabling acro is and they said it has to do with how they grow, more out and then up. My question is, how should I mount this frag?

Right now, I have it mounted at a side angle, so it's growing outward from the rock it's mounted to. Is this O.K., or should it be mounted more upright? Or does it make any difference?
Thanks Gerard

I would mount it upright because it's a frag. It will table naturally as it grows.

I've had mine for about a month or so now and though it looked really awesome when I got it and its already encrusted quite a bit, it has lost its original color and is now a pale tan/red. No more green is visible. I'm hoping its just because my tank is still maturing and that eventually it will regain its color. I have it under strong 400watt 20K radium lighting in fairly strong flow.

I would mount it upright because it's a frag. It will table naturally as it grows.

placing them in the upright position will give them instant saleability.

But placing them sideways will give you a better colony in the long run. Also in a shorter amount of time you will have a biger colony. Its not like in the wild they land right side up, its not natural to mount frags standing up right. By having them mounting them side ways you are giving more surface area for the coral to encrust, plus you are giving a lot more of the coralights better flow and light than you would with a frag standing up right.

1. You're a moron. (or maybe you just enjoy pushing peoples buttons to get a response)
2. It's under a Radium only.
3. I don't even own a photoshop program.
4. It is an underwater, point and shoot camera so...YES I'm pretty sure white balance is off since it's set on auto. I'm not a photographer. Nothing like a macro shot to only focus on the frag and not things around it, huh? Nothing else in that pic is blurry is it??

I've had mine since the week it came out and in the first week or ten days it lost a bit of the green but it came back after moving it to its happy place.

This thing is a weed I must say, I think it's going to be one of the nicest ones I have if it tables out like they say. One of the tips is quite light (the closest to the light) but as it grows out the color comes with it. I have one other acro that does this but most of the others don't so I'm not sure if this is the norm or it's the placement.

I got my red planet and was wondering what the best placement was. I am running 250W DE MH 20k Helios and I have a 30" deep tank. Would the red planet be happiest in the middle, top or bottom of the tank?

I have a Solana 34 witha Sunpod 150 HQI with XM 15K and the piece about 11 inches down from the light, medium flow I guess.

It's a crap shoot with me and the camera so sorry how these turned out but I think you can see the growth.

hmmmm... lots of concern about photoshopping here. Let me say and I'm sure cato isn't looking for defenders that trying to misrepresent isn't his style.

I'm pretty certain what you are seeing in the eggcrate has nothing to do with photoshop and everything to do with chromatic abberation (something common with medium to low quality lens's) (sorry cato) This is a perfect example where light that travels through the lens bends at different levels so that the end result is common to have blue and violet colors be out of focus thus creating the double image. CA gets even worse when the lens is pushed to its limits (like macro or zoom) Sorry to be a bore....just wanted to join the know it all group without knowing it all.....;)

I have had this one for about 2 weeks. It is under high flow high intensity. The base is actually turning blue.

Wish mine kept its green. I lose green on almost all my SPS even though they grow and stay blues/purples and now a red. Mine looks like Steves.

Try dosing a small amount of iron. I use ZEOvit brand iron and it will bring the greens out.

I agree. I've had the toughest time keeping all greens so I'm trying the Zeo Iron. It's been about 3-4weeks and there's a definite improvement. Very pleased. :)
