refuge flow?

i have a 5 gal HOB refugium. i was wondering whats a good flow rate? i have the original pump that came with the kit but it does not seem to being doing well. i have lots of debris settling on the bottom and there is a slight odor to the water. there is also a slight film on top of the water. is this normal? any suggestions?

You should certainly not have a film over the top of the water.

I would say you should increase the flow. But that depends on what you want the fuge to do. If you want it for nutrient export growing chaeto a pretty hig flow rate is best, if you want it for nutrient export pgrowing caulerpa you want a medium flow rate. If you want ti for growing pods, I would suggest a mid-high flow rate so more pods flow out with the water.
