It sounds like it would be fine, as long as water is moving through it. Heck I've seen people turn AquaClear Power Filters into small HOB refugiums.

THat is such an easy cool Idea!
But how to keep the sand/dirt mix from entering the motor?

I'll have to check this out. Now I feel guilty for throwing ours away.
If I buy it again which model would you suggest I buy just the biggest one?
