I have the same zoas, but with a brownish purple skirt. Are you saying that the skirt used to be purple as well?

yes when i first got them, they were all purple, skirt and all. it was one color

yes the skirt was purple as well...the zoas were 100% all purple and very bland looking and ive had them for probably going on 3-4 months now and they havnt grown very fast but the color change has been awesome

PHE's

in high light the red ring pops and the skirt lightens to yellowish green.

low light light the entire thing dull out and the ring which is the coolest part of them fades

Wen you say purple do you mean brown?

A lot of "purple" look brown to me and in your case it was probably that and the lighting helped them to color up.

I'm ashamed that I know this...PHE stands for Purple Hearted Zoanthid, the E is just a continuation of the heart and and probably was added by the namer because of the PE craze at the time. PHE red ring is the name for when they develop a bright red ring.
