Great looking setup, warr40, I really like the hammer coral.

Thanx, its my favorite piece of coral i ever had.
I'm trying to get more coral now to really get the color going in the tank.
I'm also trying to improve my photography skills so everyone can see the true color of my tank.

nice set-up
i wish i did a overflow box like u i have the stupid elbow i have

mkzimms
08/16/2008, 11:27 PM
the overflow box was really a last minute thing. i was going crazy looking for overflow ideas and getting stressed about what to do. i was going to go with the elbow but with a durso style open tube to reduce the gurgling. out of luck the night before i was going to drill the hole for it i stumbled upon glass-holes.com and ordered it that night for overnight delivery. its really amazing and the quality of it is great.

http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r167/mkzimms/DSC02585.jpg

top baffle removed to view bulkhead.
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r167/mkzimms/DSC03254.jpg

the cool thing about the overflow box is its use of baffles to make the elbow draw from under the water line to stop the gurgling and hicupping. it works like this

http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r167/mkzimms/baffles.jpg

http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r167/mkzimms/DSC02577.jpg

my pictures above has the top baffle removed so you can see the other side baffles.

Some older pics. I am currently moving my setup to the basement because it is cooler and I wanted to do something like a calflo. But I have not made up my mind yet. All my corals are in holding tanks right now. Thinking of going with 1 inch bulkheads then to 1.5 returns to the sump. Probably a little over kill. I don't know still researching .

mkzimms

That overflow might be something I might consider. Is it silent?

mkzimms: I have never seen the glass-holes.com overflow until now and really like it. How quiet is it? Which model did you get (700gph kit)? I think a pair of these will be perfect for my next build.

mkzimms
08/17/2008, 03:09 PM
im using the 700gph kit.

yea, its almost completly silent. no gurgles or hicups, just the sound of water flowing down the drain pipe. im currently running a 1.5 inch drain pipe to the sump and a magdrive7 back to the DT with .5 inch return line. getting about 650gph through the system. if i had to do it again id step the 1.5 inch elbow into a 1 inch drain pipe to let the pipe fill a little more while draining to cut down on the turbulance into the sump.

next weekend im redoing the plumbing to go with the 1 drain pipe and putting on a magdrive9.5 returning with 3/4 pipe to the DT. that will give me a little more leway to adjust the flow instead of just having the mag7 run full blast.

im really happy with the glass-holes kit and those guys had about the best customer service ever. scott sat on the phone for me for about an hour talking different concepts with me.

Here’s mine (sorry for the crappy pics). Been up and running since late June. I upgraded from a 12-gallon cube and still have a long way to go.

Equipment:
-Aquaclear HOB filter with floss and Chemipure
- Two Koralia 2’s
- 36” Current Sundial T5HO (stock bulbs still)

Future plans include replacing bulbs, replacing the K2’s with a Vortech MP-20 and adding a HOB fuge to reduce equipment on the back wall. Other than that, I am really trying to keep this tank open and simple.

Livestock:
- Two B/W Ocellaris Clowns
- Midas Blenny
- Fire shrimp
- CUC
- Duncan
- Frogspawn
- Leptastrea
- Pipe organ
- Pulsing Xenia
- Acan

Maintenace:
- Weekly 5-gallon WC
- Replace floss every 2-3 days

awesome man, i was about to silicone my baffles last night, but my tube of silicone was solidified...

i meant the distance to the first baffle in the sump tho, not diameter of the skimmer, sorry about that. i have read everything from 8x10 to 11x13 for the footprint, but it looks from your pics that the long dimension fits in the 12" width of the tank, so the first baffle can be closer to 10" than 13"... hopefully..

i'm waiting for october 1st to order the skimmer from marinedepot with a 20% coupon :)

sorry to take this thread off track...

Got everything moved over from my 29g last night. I still have 3 damsels and a zoa covered rock in the 12g aquapod tank. I am going to call a LFS tomorrow to see if they will take the damsels and I will be fragging up the zoas because I don't want to add the current rock they are on to my tank.

I'll be moving some stuff around once it settles a bit and the sand stops blowing all over.

i have an mp-20 on mine. i like it alot. it's the only flow in the tank besides about 400gph for the return. i keep mostly lps, and its' cranked up all the way on reefcrest mode, and everything is really happy. i don't think an mp-40w would be too much if you wanted to go that way tho.

I love the dimensions of my 40B. It's wrapping up cycling now.

40B with two 1" drains, 3/4" return, closed loop with 1" intake and two 3/4" outputs. Dusting of sand on the bottom.

Closed loop is a Mag 12 running through a SCWD.

20L sump with 8" DSB

Deltec APF600 skimmer

2x175w halides and 2x39w T5 actinics

200w titanium heater

Mag 7 return

Two TLF reactors (one GAC, one GFO)

JBJ ATO

One modded MJ 1200

Calcium reactor

Ozone generator

ACIII Pro controller with temp, pH, ORP and salinity probes

CF fuge light

Ghetto fuge :)

The rock is just in there cycling righ now, the aquascape will change.

Bought a used 40B with a 20L sump.

It's drilled with some kind of home made overflow
2 K3's
Some kind of T5 fixture I can't identify (4 bulb)
Some kind of return pump I can't identify
Euroreef RS-80
250W Heater
3/4" pvc for overflow.

Set it up Friday with 53 lbs of live rock (mix of styles) and 60 lbs of aragonite.

I think I may have a little too much rock? It's really hard for me and the wife-to-be to gauge how 53 lbs of rock will work together in the store.

I'll put better pics up soon but for now, iphone it is.

This is my first non-FW tank - total n00b.

I just transferred all my coral and rocks from my 39g cadlights. I love the room in this baby.

I just got mine going about a month ago and its still developing. Doubt I will have anything living in it until spring. Its a glass aquarium with acrylic sump.
My plan is for an SPS heavy mixed reef. Full RC build thread is Here (http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1902373)

*The filter sock in this pic was temp as I added new Live Rock and completed the setup. It has since been removed.

I plan to use these components:

Octopus XP-1000SSS
2x Vortec MP-10w ES
LET T5 Retro, 24" 6x24w (4ATI Blue Plus, 1UVL Actinic White, 1 GE 6500K)
Neptune Apex
Litre Meter Dosing Pump

@Vidson
Anyone running a vortech pump on their 40 breeder? Which one? how do you Like it?

I was skeptical and bought one MP10 as I had heard some pretty solid negatives about them but forget all that, its brilliant. I will be picking up a second one soon. I think 2XMP10s at about 70% in a 40G will be just right for a new SPS tank and totally silent.

Does my 58g count? It's the same footprint, just 5" taller.

Glad this popped back up. I have been debating the overflow and lights. After looking through this, the 700 gph Glass-holes overflow looks good. I was debating between that and the nano. But it really doesn't look like it takes up much real estate and will give me the leeway I need (plus it could go on a bigger tank if I wanted). The 6 bulb tek on the stands also looks good. I was planning on that, but it is nice to see it in action.

I wonder if a K4 would be too much in there. I have two sitting around.

I want to drill for an internal overflow on my 40b. Is this doable. I think I saw two tanks set up that way. Also, where can I get the overflow box at? Thanks
