View Full Version : When to Feed Zoa's

I'm just curious when the best feeding time for zooanthids are? When I get home from night shift, the tentacles of all my soft corals are extended in feeding mode, so its the ideal time to put food in for them.

However the zoo's are closed at night, and open during the day ... do they do most of their feeding during the day time?

here is a pic of the zoo's in question

The zoanthids you have pictured do not exhibit prey capture so it's not really possible to feed them. At least not with an conventional coral foods... They're highly autotrophic and will take whatever else they need from the water in the form of disolved organic nutrients.

Do you have any other polyps in your tank?

Yes I have a few other types as well. Some with long feelers, and a dark purple frag that only has 5 polyps on it. I'll try to snap some pics and post them. They are far from the glass, so a macro shot is out of the question ... hopefully it will be clear enough to see though.

Here are some shots of some of the others in the tank.

these three photo's are of the same rock, but there are several different types by the looks of things:

These area brown less pretty polyp, but seem very active.

These are some purple star polyps ... not sure how they feed either ...

This is the one that I couldn't get a good shot of because its deep back from the glass.

I only have 5 heads on the frag.

Do yourself a favor and get those star polyps off of your main reef structure while you still can

glue them to a wall...or set them against a wall so they can climb up on their own....or put thme on their own island. do not let the spread onto your reef or you will soon stop thinking they are even remotely pretty in any way

I completely agree with flyyyguy. I am constantly fighting them they kill SPS coral extremely fast.

Hmmm you guys bring up a good point about the star polyps. I posistioned mine in a new place and like where they are and they are starting to grow on on the rocks. I think I may rip them off tomorow and just lean them up against the wall somewhere.

Also, lowjack, the tan polyps, last pictured, look like palythoas to me.
They will readily accept cyclopeze and other foods at any time during the day.
