so i am trying to figure out how much it would cost me to run a chiller on my tank. current temps are topping out at 87 degress. i am thinking about adding a Aqua Logic Delta Star Chiller 1/4 HP to my 75g tank. it says its 5.4 amps and 115 volts. please correct me if i made a mistake here. this is ball park so no need to meticoulisly dissect everything just ball park number are ok. thanks

5.4 x 115 = 621 watts
621w x 2 hours per day = 1242 ( i assume two hours is sufficient to maintain the temp at around 80 +/- 1)
1242w x 7 days a week = 8694w
8694w x 52 weeks = 452088w
451088w / 1000 watts per kilowatt = 452.09 kwh per year
452.09 kwh x $0.17 per kwh = $76.86

is that about right? or did i miss something?

I would definitely change the 52 weeks, as most chillers run during the summer months.

Mine rarely kicks on in the winter.

Otherwise, I think that looks good.

This should be correct assuming you are being charged $0.17/kwh.

There is also line resistance [ohms]. If you want to see more.

As he posted above, you may not run your chiller in the winter, but id bet your chiller could run 8 hours a day if you live somewhere with really hot summers. Id say your math is probably a fair guess but not completely dependable due to unknown factors.

ok thanks. it just sounded really low since i keep seeing people post about chillers upping their light bills by $200+ a month. :-) i realize that the chiller would run more during the summer but it would not run at all during the winter so it should balance out. thanks for your response :-)

I think the MH are what run up my electrical bills, but I could be wrong.
