since not all of us can afford controlable tunze, vortechs or koralias; does anyone move their powerheads from time to time, ya know change up the flow?

I dont, but always wondered if it would be good for the tank to do so.

I used to run modded powerheads heads
(cutting the nozzles down/off) on a cheap wavemaker

Then I got the fancy controllable tunze and a profilux controller.....

I think the cheap wave maker and modded powerheads
worked better at creating a more random flow.

I do from time to time, my modded Maxi-Jets are epoxied to algae magnets, so they are pretty easy to move.

Every week; and I am using controllable Tunze streams.

Change the direction of the output of non-modded Maxi-Jets everycouple of weeks along with a change in height position. At the same time, I take the MJ in hand and use the output to blow off the rockwork in and around the corals -- added detrius goes into the water column and either drains off via overflows or vacuumed up. Once a month, take the time to brush off the impellers and do a generaal cleaning of the jets.

asides from those who have controlable vortechs Mikeeee. but before you did, did you occasionally move yours?

Yes. I run 4 maxi jets with the sure flow mod on a standard 150 gallon tank with a wavemaster pro. Always trying to get that little extra.

i voted once in a blue moon, as ive moved 1 of them probably only twice this year, and not touched any of the others

I use to move my vortech around every blue moon in my 120 SPS tank but found that the Corals like the flow just as is....

Before when i had K4's only..yes i did move them. But only a couple times till i got tired of moving them lol. I found the right place where i think everything was happy so i kept them there. But of course when you start adding more corals..you want to try and avoid direct flow so than they have to be move again sometimes. It helps a lot if you have a powerhead that has a WIDE spread. I love my VorTech's for that.

Me too and it rocks.

Every few months I'll take a powerhead in hand and give the rocks and crevices a really good blast. It's surprising how much detritus can accumulate even in a very high flow SPS tank.

I move my powerheads. I mean... what do you do, leave them in the tank when you clean them? Nah, man, you gotta move them into the sink to scrub them well.

Ohhh, I get what you mean now... no, I dont move the powerheads. I put all my corals on an underwater turntable that spins back and forth... dont even use powerheads.

I did... cut a disk of acrylic and hung it on a string.

Haven't moved mine in over a year. Though, I have a mixed tank, SPS and Haddoni anemones. Haddonis aren't found of a lot of direct flow, I have the powerheads placed where both the Haddonis and the SPS are happy, so I am not going to move them.
