View Full Version : Hose adapter question for RO units

I just got a deluxe spectra pure 90gpd RO/DI unit.
I didn't get the hose adapter with it. (3/4" > 1/4")
I was wondering if such a think can be found at home depot or a hardware store vs. buying it for $6 which doesn't bother me but then spending $10 on shipping....

They may not have the exact thing, but you should be able to find all the fittings or parts to do the job yourself.

Not sure if 3/4" hose threads are slightly different than regular 3/4"(like PVC), but you will need a reducer from 3/4 to 1/4"(MPT X FPT), then form there you can add a threaded speed-fit fitting to accept the RO line, they have them in a bunch of different configurations(mini ball valves, elbows, etc.). Wonder why your unit didn't come with one(was it new?). Mine came with it. If it was new I would complain to whomever I got it from or call Spectrapure and complain, I would think they would ship something like that right out to you, I could be wrong though.
Good luck. Oh, if you don't have any, pick up some teflon tape when you are at the hardware store.

I did get it used and I got a great deal on it....everything else came with it and is in good shape. What do you mean by MPTxFPT.

I'm sorry, I screwed up(it was late, no excuse though), but the adapter or reducer should be FPT X FPT(meaning it has female threads, the threads are in the inside of the piece, not the outside, like a MPT is. Again sorry for the mistake. Did this help?

alright, I think I have got it now, it is hard to do plumbing in your head sometimes, there are so many fittings, but sometimes they still don't have what you need. Here are two solutions to the problem. If they don't have a 3/4"FPT X 1/4" FPT, then what you have to do is a 3/4" FPT coupling(both sides FPT), then from there a 3/4"MPT X 1/4" FPT reducer/adapter(not sure what it is exactly called, either a reducer or adapter), then the threaded 1/4" speed fit fitting(MPT X speed-fit). I hope this helps and I don't think I forgot anything this time. Good luck, I really like my unit that I have, same one as yours, I run a dual DI chamber along with it.

Seems like it is substantial enough. I am heading to the plumbing store now to see what I can do.

Do you have a 900RR, I saw this in your interests. I had a 95' RR, sold/traded it for my dirtbike, I sure do miss it sometimes. Maybe my wife will let me get an R1 or GSXR1000 someday, I doubt I'd ever ride it(reason for selling the RR). Have a good weekend.

I actually ended up getting an icemaker kit with a saddle valve if that means anything to you. I printed out your instructions and brought it there and we weren't able to put anything together as you instructed. They didn't have anything that could get me to a 3/4".
Anyways, ya I have a 99 CBR which is for sale right now. It is actually a stunter. They are a lot of fun but both my bikes are for sale right now. I have decided I cannot test the laws of gravity anymore and I started to use my head a little. What's funny is last year I couldn't get my GF to even look at the thing and she finally came out on it this year and now she can't get enough.
I like the new R1's as well but we'll see if that ever comes around.
Thanks for all your help.

Sorry, I'm glad you got or can get it going now with the saddle valve kit. Yeah, I know what you mean, I had to quit racing motocross/hare scrambles because of back injury and also my 3 small children take up most of my time now. Good luck with your filter. Have a good weekend.

Go with the gsxr. I have had my share of bikes, and suzuki is the way to go unless you are going with the brand new R1. :)
You should be able to pick up a hose adapter at any home depot. I have a Y one so I can hook up my wash machine, and rodi up to the one faucet. They also will have a 1/4" connector that you can screw to a standard faucet.
By the way it is a beautiful day in St. Louis 80 and sunny. So I have to go.:)

Ok here is the problem now.
I set up everything and let the water run through. When I let the water run through it only fills up the sediment and carbon filter about halfway and then it starts coming out of the waste house at a rate that doesn't allow it fill up the rest of the canisters. They both stay about half full.
However, when I hold my finger over the waste hose it builds pressure and fills up the canisters but when it got up to about 40 I couldn't hold it anymore as it was just leaking out of the side of my finger.
I was looking through the manual and saw something about the length of the hose between the flow restrictor and something something. (where 4 hoses come together in the plastic thing)
Through all this information I feel that the hose is too long maybe? As there is too much waste water coming out?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Aside from this thread....here's my piece.

Nice bike.
Do you have the flow restrictor on?

what is your water pressure at? I have a well, and a well pump so the pressure slowly goes down until the pump comes back on a 50psi, shuts off at 70psi. I didn't have problem with the canisters not filling, but I too was getting far to much waste water, it was like 10:1(waste vs. product), I just put a mini-ball valve on the waste line(so I get a 4:1 bad vs. good), acting as more of a restrictor, I can't say if I am doing harm to the membrane or not, but have been using it this way for about 8 months now, still get a TDS of 2 coming from RO and 0 coming from the DI canisters. If you are going by the book, I would give Spectrapure a call on Monday, you may need a longer flow restrictor and a booster pump, not sure.
I really like the GSXR, thanks for sharing your ride.

I think I need a shorter flow restrictor if I read correct. I actually just have to sit down, get my mind straight and do the math ahah.
My water pump at the well is set at somewhere around 50. I haven't seen it drop below 45 nor go above 60.
And reefgeorge when you ask is the flow restrictor on...?
I don't really see anything to have it on or off. Seems like it is just a mechanism there that is always in effect.

Hey, I guess you PM box is full, I can't send any replies. This is what my last reply was: Yeah, I don't know what to say about that, I'd offer him less if you need a new membrane(and I suspect heavily you do), I guess you'll have to work it out with the guy. Like I said before, I'll help you as much as I can, but that I can do nothing about. Good luck, I hope you get that straightened out, maybe just ship it back and buy a new one in a couple of weeks, would probably be what I would do.
