Question for those of you who have killed the dreaded hair algae.

Does it leave a stinky brown mess behind when it dies? I have some nasty brown algae in my tank that I believe is the green hair algae I had dying. Any ideas? It is not a patch, they are more like strands like the green hair algae looked.

sounds a bit more like dinoflagellates or cyano. can you get a picture?

i just got a handle on my HA and it pretty much just turned white and dissapeared with no other consequences. how did you get rid of it, because if something else is growing in its place then you probably havent gotten a handle on the actuall problem?

I'll try to get a picture, but it definitely has not turned white. It is extremely easy to brush off with a toothbrush and when you pull it out it definitely smells rotten.

it is dying I did big water changes and as it died off cyano covered it and ate up the nutrients and shaded the hair so it killed it even more then the cyano went away mine was due to spent ro filters
