DIY LR Effective?

I am looking into making DIY live rock using the salted method. Does DIY LR ever become an efficient biological filter when seeded with real LR? How long would this take? If not, what can I do to increase my bio. filtration capacity? I assume DIY LR is about the same as the dried LR I keep seeing these days, so what to you guys with dried LR do to get the ball rolling?

it's just as effective as any rock once it's established in the tank.
