I've been given a 25 g tall tank & cabinet...I'm turning it into a mini reef. I have a disagreement w/ a friend over the size of the sump...I think the sump needs to be at least 10 g..my friend says a 5.5 g is sufficient. I don't want just sufficient...I want good. Is there any rule re: sump size vs tank size? Thanks...

Well the bigger the sump the better I would say and if you are planning on a 10 already then go with it. I have a 10 gallon sump on my 29 and I could say if it was any smaller it would be even more of a pain in the ***. To tell you the truth, anything less than 10 gal. I would find pointless by the time you put the baffles in etc. etc.

I have to agree with Reefer07. I went with a 10g sump on my 20 because I couldn't fit anything bigger, and I can't imagine going smaller. Go with the 10, and I'd suggest going bigger if you have the room.

Go with the biggest sump that fits the space available. I have a 28 gallon custom made sump on my 34 gal RSM because that is all that would fit inside the cabinet. I have a 67 gal sump on my 90.

Some people have sumps larger than the display tank.

Thanks...I'll get measurements and build the largest sump that will fit into my cabinet.
