View Full Version : Quick question about color changing in my zoos

I have had this particular patch of zoos for almost a year now.
I just recently got a T-5 setup (3 weeks ago) and this particular patch has started to change colors.
They are just a common darker purple colony with yellow mouths and a dull greenish yellow skirts.
What is happening is the insides around the mouths are starting to get all white.
It doesn't appear unhealthy and they are still growing.
Anyone have any ideas as to what's happening. Nothing is really happening with any other zoos in my tank. Just this particular patch.

You may be seeing your zoos adapting to greater lighting intensity in your tank. If lighting intensity is greater in your tank the corals are producing less Zooxanthellae cells, thus the amount of chlorophyll cells are decreasing making them (zoos)appear lighter. In your case with this particular Zoo patch, it may be just be adapting to new lighting. Note, this does not mean they are unhealthy, just adapting to light intensity variance.

Well does that mean that they will be that color from now on? I liked the color they were before better.
However, you are definitely right about adapting to the light. I used to run 130 watts of PC now I run 4x24 T-5 Sundial fixture.

I only bring up this correlation (my above post) after reading about this from a coral magazine describing this. It didn't say if it is a short term response with variance in color or not. If it were me in your shoes, I'd probably take that particular coral and try putting it lower in tank or in a semi-shaded area to see how it responds, since it seemed to do better with your PC lighting (lesser intensity). As they say alot here in RC forum, find a place where that coral seems "happy" or responds best to. Nothing wrong with a little experimental bias occasionally. :)
