here is a picture of the standpipes that came with my tank. i was wondering what everyone would recommend to connect another pipe to this to go down to the sump. i was wondering if there would be a connector that was long enough to screw into the bulkhead so that i wouldnt have to glue another pipe directly to the small piece of pvc extending past the bulkhead.

I think ya gotta glue a sleeve onto what's coming out of the bulk head. Not sure of anything that would be big enough to twist on to the bulk head.

Why are you opposed to gluing pipe onto pvc remnant?

is there an air hole in the top of those?

no, there is not an air hole on the top

Looks like there is enough pipe there to glue to. Just use a coupling, or a union so you never have to worry about it again if you change something.

for the bottom, you could glue it. I assume that piece is permanently affixed to the bottom of the bulkhead. If you don't like that idea, go buy some more bulkheads. You're going to want to change the top of the standpipe already, that's not a great design, so maybe redoing the whole thing is the easiest solution.

Can you tell me why that is not a good design? I am going to have to do some research on these things now... i might as well do it right now rather than later.

the way that is current setup, there's no ventilation for the standpipe. The water level in the overflow box will fluctuate, as water will siphon, then fill up, then siphon, back and forth. There are plenty of different standpipe designs, go search the DIY forum for ideas.

This is not a bad design. I have used simular designs and they work fine, but make sure that there is vent hole in the top or they will gurgle up and down.
