Excellent drawings! I would switch the return section and the refugium section. The other thing that I would do is use a T off of your drain line to feed your refugium instead of from the pump. Having the return section inbetween the refugium and the rest of the sump allows you to control the flow for each section.

I like having the return section on the end. All the water goes through each section.

Man it will take less time to actually build then it did to make the drawings. Nice work though

The other thing I would suggest would be for the lower baffles to not be as tall. The level of water in your sump will be at the level of your lower baffles. Too high of a water level might influence how well your skimmer works and more importantly will not allow for much water to enter the sump when the power goes out. If you don't leave enough room in your sump for the water to drain from the display tank, you will have a flood. I usually build the lower baffle to be about 8". Keeping it lower will also keep the water from falling as far into the return section (less bubbles returning to your display tank).

Nice design skills!!! I've always had my skimmer in-line after the refugium. More stuff that the cheato needs before the skimmer steals it all. IMO I would switch the location of the skimmer to the fuge location and vice versa. Also I agree with Josh T-off your drain line so you can have water going directly to the fuge before the skimmer, phosban, and carbon reactors you got in there also. A hungry cheato is a dead cheato.

I totally disagree with those that put the fuge before the skimmer OR feed the fuge from overflow water.

The skimmer does not remove nitrates and phosphates which is what will be the food for the fuge algae.

Fuges are generally a lower flow area. With overflow water being full of detritus it may very well be able to settle out of the water column and build up in the fuge area. Thus becoming a dirt trap and a source of nitrates rather than the opposite.

Filter sock your water - send your water through the skimmer - THEN send your water to your fuge. As stated earlier, it will still contain the "food" the fuge are is looking for.

I don't quite follow the design either. It almost looks like the fuge area is "suspended" within the sump. I don't see where the skimmer section water is going into the fuge at all.

It almost appears that it is being completely fed by T'ing off the return pump which I would AGREE with.
