View Full Version : Flow Dilemma for Mixed Reef

Starting to get into SPS, but have many LPS and zoanthids too. I have a MJ900 which is too linear of flow for the SPS, which I plan on stocking the whole top right side, which is actually a largish area, yet still about 8" wide or so. I just ordered a Koralia 1. For the 24 gallon Aquapod, its roughly 20" from side to side, so figure the length of the koralia and the spot of the SPS will be closer than that. Will the K1 be enough for them, yet not kill my LPS?? I have duncans, candy canes, acans, micros, and many zoanthids.

Any comments are welcome.

i got maxi 1200 as return and k2 in mine 16 gal, but i think k1 is enough for your tank.

I have an mj1200 and two k1 in my 29 biocube with some LPS but mostly SPS. My duncans love the flow

You should be fine. IMO.... people over do the flow thing, just as with lights.

Koralia loses the strength of flow withing few inches (it was designed for a soft flow), providing a good flow rate without harming corals. You will see the reaction of corals, and move powerhead accordingly.

Yea as far as GPH is concerned, Ive seen alot of numbers that I personally think are like WOW overkill. But I use the stock pump for the Aquapod for the return, which is basically just a trickle. This is going to shoot across the tank diagonally towards 3 large rocks, which is my SPS garden.

It looks a little different now, but thats the overall idea.

is this a 24g ? have you looked at the mp20w ? minimum flow is 500gph and you can ramp it up from that up to i believe 2,000gph and still have few settings you can play with

I think everyone would love a Vortech, if only they werent 200-400 dollars more than other powerheads =(

well the controllable tunze nano, i think the 6055 is like 200, the vortech is 295 shipped and can be upgraded to an mp40w if you ever want to.

the only thing is it looks good on some tanks since it has to be mounted on the side glass

Thats wayy too much for my budget right now haha. I think Im going to order a K2 and take out my MJ900. Hopefully the LPS wont be too upset, and I dont really care how my GSP reacts.

IME, the LPS you listed will be fine in a little more flow. Euphyllia really don't seem to like too much flow, but acans, micros, blastos should be fine. Not sure about the Duncan, never kept one. The zoas may or may not like the flow, and the GSP will love it.

I agree. The koralia is still a very efficient and reliable Powerhead but I was a little dissapointed when I got my first one as I had never really checked them out before.

I got the K2, in hopes that it will provide strong flow just a few inches or so away from it, so hopefully the SPS will like it. My LPS I think should be ok, and if not, Ill add another small rock in front of the duncan as a buffer.
