Octopus Extreme drain pipe question

I was thinking of getting a Octopus Extreme 160 to replace my EuroReef RS80. My question is regarding the water outlet pipe on the Octo 160. Does it have to be cut shorter to make the outlet pipe above the water level in the sump? That is what the instruction manual says for the Euroreef for best performance. However, it also makes it noisy with the water pouring down into the sump out of the outlet pipe. I was wondering if the outlet pipe on the octopus 160 can be submerged under water in the sump, and still perform consistently?
