how many watts do you need on a 12 gallon

That's a very open ended question that really doesn't have an answer. What do you want to keep in the tank? What type of lighting are we talking about (Metal halide, PC, T-5. . .)? I think the first thing you want to do is figure out what type of lighting you want and then decide what sort of wattage will work best.

You'll probably have a hard time finding High Output (HO) T-5s that size. I think 22" bulbs are about the smallest you find, and I'm assuming your tank is less that 22" wide. Now, they do make smaller Normal Output (NO) T-5s. A friend of mine uses them on her Nano tank, but I can't remember where she got them. T-5s would be my personal preferences, assuming I could find individual reflectors. With either, though, it depends on what you want to keep in the tank. You still haven't enlightened us on that little detail.
