Which one do you guys run for filter media? I'm thinking about just getting a big $5 sheet of filter media and cutting it out to fit the squares in my Biocube's filter rather than buying the $10 BC brand filter media every two weeks. A way to save some money.

Is either media more preferred than the other? I haven't really been able to wrap my head around the discussions of filter media and why carbon is so great (or so bad).

Can anyone tell me the benefits and downsides of either?

Really a newbie question, but I need some light shed on this!

Here's a good read:

That read, I like to run carbon periodically to clean up the water and take the slight yellow tinge out. Think of it like a water polisher. You can use it all the time if you want, but I don't.
