Sorry it is so big. I didn't see anything in the menu to reduce the display size.

Here's another one with an Anemone Crab, Scarlet Hermit Crab, and Blue Leg Hermit Crab holding a private meeting.

Very nice pictures Sabine.
I see you're from France, will be in Paris in 2 weeks for 1 week. any idea if there are any good LFS or aquariums to visit?

kactusficus
09/08/2008, 03:11 PM
Ho yes, there's a great one (almost the most famous in France) named "All Marine", at Collegien, nearby Paris, but it's not very easy to go to if you're not driving... If you have the budget for a quite long taxi ride from Paris though (around 30 minutes), it could be a nice thing to see, to compare with your stores...
Or let me see, I'm involved in a forum in France, maybe I can ask there if there's some parisian going in this shop during the weeke or better, weekend, and see if there's someone to take you for a lift? The "boss" of the forum is goign there almost every weekend, maybe he can take you there...

Please PM me if you're interested, or to tell me what you want to do, and I'll try to help! ;)

Thanks a lot for your kind offer and help Sabine.
It'll be great if I can accompany anyone going there, hopefully my schedule in France will allow it. Will try to locate it and see how far it will be from where I will be.

kactusficus
09/08/2008, 03:46 PM
they have a website by the way:

http://www.all-marine.net/topic/index.html

and their google maps location:

http://maps.google.fr/maps?f=q&hl=fr&geocode=&q=2+all%C3%A9e+du+clos+des+charmes+Coll%C3%A9gien+&sll=47.15984

Maybe everything there will seem very common to you, because for us French, we're always drooling on the rare and beautiful animals you american guys have, and that we never see in our stores (colored aussie acanthastreas, for example, is my personnal absolute dream.... unaffordable and seen like twice a year in France!!)

;)

Sabine,
I'm Lebanese not American so unfortunately don't have the luxury of going to an LFS and choosing my stuff when ever I want. we only have one LFS that gets stock ( fisha nd mostly soft corals and few LPS) once every 3-4 weeks and another that gets you mail orders for softes and fish too.
I mange to grab a thing or two from each travel I do but sometimes that is limited by local regulations not allowing or making it very ahrd to take out corals or fish with you out of the country.
Thanks for the links will check how far I'll be.

Hoooo yes, I just saw your "location" written under your name!
Interesting to know how dofferent country of the world get access to marine animals!

So I hope you'll find nice things to see and buy there, let me know if you need my assistance to find a hobbyist to take you there! ;)

kactusficus
09/09/2008, 02:00 PM
Maroun C, your crab is a different specie, with smaller dark purple spots, it's Neopetrolisthes maculatus, and those ones with the red spots are Neopetrolisthes oshimai.

OK ready for some lousy photography?
Here is a guy I collected here in NY, they are very common here.
We call them rock crabs. He is saying "let me at one of those Sissy pink polka dot porceleon, not quite crabs"
I also collected my avitar in the Long Island Sound at night which is where I took

I guess it's better than taking them out of your underware.
Crabs we got by the barrel. I can fill a five gallon bucket with crabs in a few minutes

I don't keep the local crabs in a tank with corals. I am sure they would eat anything

My pics were not taken with a macro lens. There are many other alternatives which might give you very good images at the cost of much more work. Reversing rings, extension tubes, Teleconverters used alone or combined....
Also close up lenses sometimes give good results.
Still you are right a decent macro lens is the way to go in the end.

Did he really eat nori? what type of crab is this? Can you share your lighitng setup for this shot.

Xandernfs

Nice shot.
Are those red hermits really less likely to hit on snails? mine did not attack snailsa s much as the blue ones however they were very aggressive in digging hiding hles under the rocks which seemed risky for hte rock structure and caused me to remove them.

Sorry, I haven't been back here in a while. All of the exif data is included with the picture. The lens is a Sigma 150 macro and I probably had a Canon 500D closeup filter on it.

That was an emerald crab, Mithrax sculptus. Most will eat nori if offered; his first taste was from some scraps we gave to our starry blenny. After that we started feeding him nori once a week as he had cleaned the tank of bubble algae, but it wasn't enough and he starved to death (by my guess).

Lighting is 4x54W T5: 2x ATI Blue+, 1x UVL AquaSun, 1x UVL Super Actinic. I adjusted the color in PS, what you see is the actual color of our tank. The camera is a Panasonic DMC-LZ1 believe it or not, just set on 'macro' mode with low iso and a nice steady tripod.

Nice thread! And one of my favorite subjects in my tank...my crabs!

This one needed some color correction, but I was lazy...my dearly missed white claw hermit saying "What do you want?".

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v729/FramerKat/My%20Nano%20Aquarium/DSCN5549.jpg

An odd little guy I got from a fellow FMAS member...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v729/FramerKat/My%20Nano%20Aquarium/IMGP6887.jpg

This guy's shell was stuck in a hole in a rock, so his body was just hanging...I had to get in there an put him upright after taking the photo:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v729/FramerKat/My%20Nano%20Aquarium/Invertibrates/IMGP5795.jpg

Hermit handstand!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v729/FramerKat/My%20Nano%20Aquarium/Invertibrates/Misc-2.jpg

And last, but never least, my white clawed, blue eyed boy!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v729/FramerKat/My%20Nano%20Aquarium/Invertibrates/PDR_2238.jpg

That's all the crabs I've had recently...had an emerald that started chewing on my mushrooms and a sally lightfoot that disappeared, so th, th, that's all folks! Enjoy!

Show us your crabs!
