Unfortunately it looks like I'll be selling my 90g setup, I am however planning on getting another tank. I know it's been said that all Tangs should have a tank that's at least 72" long, I'm wondering if the following dimesions would be ok:

60 x 24 x 24

48 x 36 x 30

or any other dimensions less than 72" long.

I have a yellow tang in a 150 (60x24x24) if I had it to do over I would have gone with a 180 . That said as the tang grows it becomes more and more territorial and a yellow is on the smaller side as tangs go.

My yellow tang is in a 180 and was formally in a 75 and he is a bastard with any new fish...to the point of being evicted. I would just get the 180 if you want tangs...

If the choice is between two tanks with similar overall gallons, I'd get the longer one, as the length is really the most important factor when considering the needs of tangs.

I like to give my tangs 5ft of height with about 2 feet of length! They love it!

On a serious side, get a 60 x 36 x 30 x if you can. The extra cost to get a custom of that size built will be offset once you can see how much happier tangs and large angels will be. Plus the cost of a tank is usually the cheaper and longer lasting cost.

60 x 36 x 30 sounds sweet!!! I wonder how many tangs and angels could live happily in that size tank???

Aquascape has a lot to do with it also. I have a 60x36x20, and my tangs seem happy. but I have islands, and tons of tunnels that they are continuously zipping throughout. Well, the Yellows, sailfin and purple zip through them. The blonde naso just kind of hangs out in the front of the tank. If youre going 24" front to back though, Id agree with the rest, and get at least 72".

depends on the tang

zebrasoma (yellow, purple, sailfin) and bristletooth (tomini) don't need as long of a tank

naso, acanthuras (sp?) like powder blue), vlamingi tang and other large tangs should be 60"+ unless they're babies.

Yea, go for the 60 x 36 x 30 x. You won't regret it.

60x36x30 is 280 gals the only hard part will be reaching the bottom of the tank. For most people reaching 24" is about maximum ,30" means you can't see what you are reaching for and your cheek will be touching the water. 36" front to back is great if you have access to the back of the tank, if not it is horrible. I have serviced many different tanks and the general rule is if it is difficult it won't get done as often as needed

With a 6in DSB it shouldn't too difficult to reach the bottom of the substrate. If anything go with a 60 x 36 x 24 x, or just buy a 2 foot mini ladder/step stool.

i have 60 x 36 x 30 x

30" deep is a little tough but worth it in my opinion. here's my tank shortly after cycle... i need to update pics.

i like the dimensions... if i did it over, i might go 72"... w/h are perfect though

Stepladder or not, I've learned that in order for me to reach the bottom of my 30" tank, I cannot see what I am doing just as sassafras mentioned

So from what I've gathered if I go with a 36" wide tank then 60" long will be fine for most tangs and large angels, but if I go with 24" width then I should go for 72" long for tangs to be happy, right???

BTW, chrissreef your tank looks awesome, I love the depth. Do you have any full tank shots? Where'd you get your tank?

Hey if a 72'' is possible, then get a 72 x 36 x 24/30x tank.

The bigger the better, at least in terms of stability, having the capacity to have a larger bioload, and just the plain "WOW" factor.
