I bought 3 lumen bright 3 reflectors the 15x15x10 and did some testing on them with a lux meter all i had avalible. I tested 175w 250w and 400w 14k bulbs at 12" away from the meter. Here is what i found out i wish i would have had a par meter too.

I built a rack out of copper and painted the lights copper as well and added fans and led's to it i think it turned out pretty good.

Did you see this article?

I just put 2 400w over my new 120g, I zip tied them to the frame for peace of mind, and fixed the crooked one.

<table style="width:auto;"><tr><td><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/0f_5zyxiqVZS8_0Daq15pw"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/corn64/SLnan0f1P6I/AAAAAAAACJM/6QyQhcksOqM/s400/DSC01996.JPG" /></a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/corn64/120gDayOne83008">120g day one, 8-30-08</a></td></tr></table>

The bulbs are 20" from water, I may lower to 18", but not more.

Wow no i didn't see that i will have to read it in the morning looks like a great article thanks. How do you like yours? I think mine are the best ting i have bought for my tank. I didn't really want a canopy over mine it is a large stand and tank and it would just look way to big i think.

I love them, your setup looks really nice.
I've got radiums in now on e-ballasts, the color is actually very good w/ out supplimentation.
What wattage do you have in yours, and how high are you going to be able to place them?

I have 2 400w and one 250w for now but i think i am going to buy a electronic 400w ballast and do some testing maybe go with all electronics i tested the amp draw on my 400w and it is only 2.75 amps.
I have them on the adjustable cable so i can take them from water to celling pretty easy. If you don't mind me asking where did you get your and how much where they and the ballast ? Do you know how many amps the ballast draws.

Don't want to rain on your parade but I think that copper is going to rust pretty fast.

Copper could be very deadly to your corals.

I don't think the copper will be much risk to the corals, the lights will probably never get wet, and neither will the copper.

But the thought of it is a little unnerving.

I got mine from Aquacave, I believe for $119/each, but they are just the reflector--no cover w/ heat dissipators.
I also got Coralvue e-ballasts, I believe they were ~$140/each--I don't know the Amps.

I would start over. not worth risking a tank full of corals that could cost 1000's or 25 bucks in copper and time to paint IMO

I realize copper is bad with salt water but what do you think the water comes in to the house and most likely how it get to you facet or ro/di through copper pipes. What would you have made it out of? I got it up and going here is a quick pic. I wanted to do steel but don't have any welding gas

Looks great, and impressive numbers on the reflectors.

I see no problems whatsoever with the copper, considering it has six coats of paint on it. (Thought that needed repeating. :D )

Wow, the 250 watt in the middle sure is dimmer than the 2 400w's on the sides! I wonder How an overdriven 250watt Hamilton would look compared to the 400w's?

coryjones
09/20/2008, 08:30 AM
I just ordered a 400w ballast and 14 hamilton bulb. How do you overdrive them?

Its the reflector design, they cast a awful shadow. Not sure Im liking that on my tank now

s ruppa
09/20/2008, 11:33 AM
i have read that they run better and without shadows higher from the water than most relfectors. more like 15- 18 inches

Yeah, but who wants to run them that high? I no I dont

coryjones
09/20/2008, 03:13 PM
No the one in the middle was a 250w in that pic but i sold it and ordered a 400w ballast and bulb for it. Mine dont seem to cast shadows i have them 8" off the water and thing seem to be doing really well.

coryjones
09/20/2008, 03:15 PM
well i take it back the cross braces on the tank create a shadow if you have them too high.
