I have noticed a few of these growing on my tank glass near my sandbed recently and was wondering what they are. The following is not my pic but it is exactly what I have. I found it, of course, on google. Unfortunately the thread it was posted in was closed and it remained a mystery as to what these are. Searched and searched and finally decided to turn it over to the gurus. So here it is:

anyone know?

I'm no guru, but I think I see small translucent filiaments trailing from some of your 'red veins,' and this reminded me about something I have read about before: you may have a collection of Foramniferans on your hands. I have read about and seen pictures of an organism called Homotrema rubrum. I think they are considered benign, unless possibly the filaments irritate other more desireable organisms.
Dr. Shimek has an article on this group:

Yes, these are forams, but not Homotrema.

So, I should just leave them? I took an algae magnet to a small one to see how tough it was and it came off easy enough so I guess if they get to be an issue I can get rid of some of the annoying ones. Otherwise, would it be recommended to just leave them be?

looks like those vines from "war of the worlds" w/ tom cruise.
