My friend has a proclear skimmer and an excalibur skimmer. Both of these have rio 800s. Both I know are not so great skimmers.
I am trying to help him improve the skimmers.

How do you mesh mod a maxi jet impeller?
How do you make a maxi jet venturi?

I have a couple extra MJs and plenty of extra fittings and parts.

If anyone has any ideas, please chime in.

Thanks.

Maxi Jets cant be mesh modded. If the skimmers in question used rio 800s switch to a rio 1100s with the needle wheel. This pump can be mesh modded and pulls more water.

Why not?

Ok the link didnt take me to any info on a mj mesh. I tried to mesh a mj1200 and there was not enough room in the impellar housing to add mesh. May be someone has done it, I could be wrong.

Try the link again. It was exactly what I was looking for. Can't wait to get home and try it. Last night I made a couple DIY venturi intakes for the MJ, but the one on the link uses peices that come with the MJ.
Thanks crashrat!

I just drilled a whole in the bottom of the intake filter and stuck a air line in. I didnt even mesh mod it and mine has very very small bubbles. I am not sure that I would have gained much with a mesh mod on it. Might have to try is for the heck of it some time.

I tried the mesh on my big skimmer. Now I am back to using the needle wheel. I drilled and glued like you did. I will do some test to see if my venturis or the maxi jet venturis work better. Either way, this has to be better than a RIO pump.

Do you have any pics?

I will do the same after I get the skimmer from my friend and hook the mj to it. Should tonight or tomorrow.

that's my thread on RF, and yes the excaliber and proclear with the rejuvenating rio 800 would both benifit alot from a mesh modded maxijet 1200, to be sure. the other pump that would be good to mod for those skimmers would be the quiet one 1200 (295gph), there is a larger impellar well, and the volute doesnt hold the top of the impellar. the spare volute they provide you with could easily be made into a venturi, as well.

I will start out with the mj 900 and see how it does. If it works good, I will get a mj 1200 and try it. I am going to see how much a QO1200 is. If it is not too much, I will try one of those.

the only problem is, that one is kinda a POS, the one i made from the spare parts of the maxijet works much better.

if you happened to notice, the cpr bakpak now comes with an acclea pump with similar venturi, this style just works better.

i have occasionally had issues with the mj900's, i dunno why, mabye because they were submerged too far underwater, or the impellars were too heavy with both mesh and gg, so just beware.
theoretically you get the same air and less water gph with a mj900 so it should be better...youmight just have to mess with it a little.

have others made pics of their mj900/1200 skimmer mods??

How and what did you use to make your venturi? Do you have pics?

I tried a DIY venturi just like that with a 600 and a 900, but I couldn't get it to pull air.
My guess is that it is because the pump was in 8 inches of water.

Do you think it would work with a 1200?

It worked for me with a 1200. I drilled out the hole in the air tube nipple to make it bigger too.

crashrat-

How deep was your water?

crashrat

6 inches or so. I found the mj1200 to be too much for the Bak pak that I used it for, not sure how it would act in deeper water or a different skimmer.
