View Full Version : Thors 450 Build Thread!!!!!!!

I started with a 90 and then went to a 220. I bought a few tangs from a fellow reefer for the 220 and things just took off. After a couple years with the 220 I wanted out. I just couldn't bare the thought of getting rid of my prized Orange Shoulder Tang. So I went out and bought the 450. That is where this story begins.

Here is the stand done with the several coats of killz to protect it.
http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd166/thor32766/pic414.jpg

I bought this 230 gallon tank from someone to build my sump/Refugium out of. It worked out great, being its only 5 feet long. Tangers from this board and I in the pic are putting the walls into place in the tank.

Stand with sump slid into place. We actually had to lift the stand up to place the sump under it.

You can see the 220 gallon next to the 450. We had to empty the 220 and move it across the room. I was putting the 450 in the place of the 220, but wanted the tank to cycle. Stressful to say the least. Tough catching the fish I have they are pretty big. We learned the best way to move big fish was to trap them in corners and catch them with buckets. Works out great!!!

Tank cycling through with my chromis, Tangers joked they probably think they are back in the ocean. They were the only fish in there for quite awhile.

This was my original skimmer Precision Marine XL 2. I sold it thinking the tank was going down with the thought of moving. Later sold it and still to this day I am fighting with FedEx because they destoyed it in shipping!!!!!

WOW, you weren't kidding about loving Tangs...those Naso's are huge and incredibly beautiful. Were they all in your 220g? I have subscribed as I know this is going to be a very nice build thread. Is this going to be a reef tank or FOWLR? Any details on your English Bulldog? I also love English Bulldogs and was so close to getting a pup, but after taking into consideration the fact that my house is two stories and I know that it would have a hard time going up stairs, I decided otherwise : (
Lastly, have you thought of keeping an Achilles or Powder BLue tang? I have never been successful with Powder Blues but currently have an Achilles (5-6 inches) that's doing VERY well with my other 3 tangs in my 225g (Purple, Yellow and Yellow Belly Blue tang).

Tangwich-Love my bulldogs. I have a boy and a girl and they are the greatest dogs in the world to me. I have been lucky(knock on wood) they have both been very healthy no problems. I want another one, but the girlfriend has enough trouble controlling the two when I am not there!!! Thats awesome to be able to keep an achilles!! They are tough fish to get established. Never thought of keeping a PBT or achilles with my tang load. Was not sure if they could handle what my red sea would hand down. She is a whopping 12" and is very tough on new fish.

Thanks Homeslizzice!!!!

Masharp1126- I used to have a ton of zoos till the regal declared war on them!!! Now I have quite a few different mushrooms and couple leathers that are starting to take off. I will continue to add mushrooms here or there. Thanks for the orange shoulder comment she is by far and away my favorite fish. She actually made the tang slideshow a couple months ago on ReefSlides.

Those are some nice looking Tangs. I have (5) in my 500 and sure enjoy them.

Your sump looks full how do you handle the back flow from the tank???

Happy Reefing

thor32766
09/18/2008, 02:41 PM
Thanks ricks. I have never had any problems with the sump overflowing even with all the power outages we have here in florida. I guess the size of the sump helps.
Yeah tangs are very entertaining to say the least!

Here's a good question that no one has asked...what do you feed and how much food do you go through on a daily or monthly basis? also, any vitamins or supplements?

thor32766
09/18/2008, 06:51 PM
Daily schedule
Mornings 3 full sheets of nori along with 2 large leafs of Romaine Lettuce.
Early evening I have frozen mixture of shrimp, mysis, formula 1 and 2. Krill, garlic selcon and zoe. I premake it once every couple months. This way when I come home I just defrost the food on RO/DI water and in it goes. I also throw in two more large leafs of romaine.
Tangs should be fed often. In the ocean they are grazers and eat all day long. A lot like cows. So when we put them in the home aquarium and feed less often they become more aggressive and territorial towards food. HTH.
thanks again tangwich!

What are some of the sizes of them?

The unicorn, Naso's look big!

thor32766
09/19/2008, 09:04 PM
The stand is 42" tall. I wanted to have it so when you walk up to you its right in your face. Chuck is adorable! Bulldogs are so entertaining.
The naso with the large streams in close to 14" I would say. Hes a big boy. Most of my fish are pretty big. All of them except the(naso) i have had over three years and all of them have more then tripled in size.
The most ridiculous growth is the vlamingi. He went from 3 inches or so to 10" now. Thats in a little over a year.

you got an emporer angel now! NIce! I am moving into my girl friends place for a couple months and I am setting up a 40 gallon breeder there. I am bored with the 46 gallon bow front. I only have one fish right now too its just a six line wrasse. Next year when I move to a place more permanent with my girl friend I am building a custom rimless 36"x24"x18" tank and going full blown SPS! Man do I miss Florida. They charge $13 for emerald crabs around here! And I saw a royal gramma for $26 the other day. I remember them for $6 sometimes in orlando.

Your water level in the sump looks like it's pretty close to the top. I'm assuming you tested that it doesn't overflow in the event of a power outage.

Just an observation.

Availability has improved a great deal over the past couple of years. We now get pretty much anything that is being collected at the time - conspics, clarions, gem tangs, koi tangs - you name it. Prices are generally 30% cheaper than the US.

bangkokmatt-So whens the gem tang coming to your tank!!!
Jd0gg2432- Here in florida we get tested pretty often with power outages. Done many a test to see. It also helps that my sump below is 230 gallons.
Erics3000- thanks the width of the tank helps. The orange shoulder is my baby. The whole reason for this tank!!!
Pauliewalnuts- Yeah I started with a 90 and that didnt last very long with my love of tangs. Then 220 was enough to hold them. So this went up. Maybe something bigger down the road. Once you go tang you never go back!

erics3000
10/01/2008, 07:35 PM
HA funny I had a sailfin for about 3 years and when I moved him to my new tank he was in Heaven. He would pick on anything that was in the tank. I bought some cleaner shrimp put them in the tank and he ate them both. He would fly from one side of the tank to the other he loved the 8 feet compared to the 4 I had.It kinda sucked he jumped out of my tank and my dog got him...Reminds me I need to finish the screen covers.

Yeah it hurt, I had him for a while. He was about 5 in and pretty fat. It was the 2nd fish I had to tell my dog to release from his mouth. He really loved the extra space and took off. I think next time I will go with at least 30 high so they can swim over rocks. I origanlly only wanted to go with 30 but went with the 25 because I was only going to use 250 mh and wound up using 400 anyway huhh. I shouldn’t have dropped the shrimp in during the day time, he figured anything that came from the top was his to eat.

Tank is one my favs...thinking of a similar set-up in the living room. Softies + Tangs, about 400G

Do you run into any humidity issues?

thor32766
10/23/2008, 01:54 PM
yes I do. I run a humidafier in the living which helps, but fills up quite often. Still wouldn't trade any negatives for having the tank the living room. Its my church!! Afterwork bud light lime and my couch watching my tangs!!
Can't wait to see your thread terence when you start your tank!

erics3000
10/24/2008, 01:50 PM
Yeah i agree with that. I wish I had my tank in my family room wall. It would be really cool to chill watch tv and check out the fish. AS long as it is set up to not glare on the tv I cant think of a better spot for a tank.

10/24/2008, 01:56 PM
Hey Thor, not that you have to justify anything to anyone but would you happen to have a video recorder to shoot a small video so that the skeptics can see how big a 450 is in reality as opposed to pictures? Ok, ok, I just want to see a video of those beauties in your tank :D

thor32766
10/24/2008, 03:08 PM
yeah I post something in photobucket. Thanks for support though tangwich. It is somewhat decieving because when I get close up to the tank they think it feeding time and its like summoning the clowns with a bell for food!! Its hard to see the depth the tank. Its 3 feet wide which helps out a lot.
mindtoy I have 13 total tangs. They have all been with me a minimum of almost 4 yrs now. A few of them almost 6yrs.
Thanks erics3000!! Love your tank also. wall seperaters are sweet! do you still have the white check?

Thanks thor32766.

I lost him a new copper band when we had fires in my area. I was out of power for a few days running the generator on and off. That is still a little sore spot for me. A few weeks ago I found a 4 inch Achiles and he has been doing fine in my tank. Not to agressive at all..

Just for fun: next time you have a party, get together line up the drinks next to your skimmer collection. See how long until someones tastes the skimmate.

Sorry bad joke but I couldn't pass it up.

What type of dehumidifier do you have?

yeah the smell might give it away first!!!! Thanks for the complament!!! Circuitcity had a promo of them, its a sunbeam 50 pint. Works great. They were 99.99 brand new!!!! They didnt last very long and since they were a promotinal item circuity city no longer carries them.
Not sure if it will work the same for you, but I had a 220 with a 75 gallon sump along with a 90 gallon tank and 20 gallon sump, before and didnt have any humidity problems.
Now that I have over 700 gallons in the living it was very apparent, but never had a problem with it before.

The orangeshoulder is one of my most passive fish. She has the best personality in the tank. She is feed nori, romaine, brocolli, vitamin packed shrimp. She is very very active though.

thor32766
11/03/2008, 11:32 AM
hey reefman, a couple of them the yellow and sailfin I have had for over 6 yrs now. The majority of them I have had a little over 3 yrs. Just about all of them have grown 3 to 4 x their original size. an example is my red sea sailfin was around 4 inches when I got her three years ago, she is now around the 12 inch mark now. Hopefully I was able to answer you question.
Thanks FUA, Yes I have an addiction!!! This is why an upgrade is due in a year or so.

i was planning to have same dimension as your tank but unfortunately my wall on my new house allows me to have 24" only to be flush on the wall:(. anyway how the angel doing are you planning to have clams in the tank?

thor32766
11/11/2008, 08:35 AM
I wouldnt dare try a clam with either of my angels. My regal and emp love clam on a half shell. They would probably love the addition a clam, but would be a pricey snack.

erics3000
11/11/2008, 09:25 AM
I had an angle a few years back and than bought a clam. I learned the hard way. I wind up giving the angle to a friend. That made me realize you really need to know what your doing. If you dont want to give your fish a $50 treat.

Tank is looking really good. Love your selection of fish. Your orange shoulder is definitely something to admire. If I ever get a larger setup that is the first tang I will add to my collection.

On a side note: keep an eye on leeks coming out of the spout of the collection container. After a while scum builds up and causes the valve not to close fully. I have my collection container set up the same way and works great but the valve needs to be cleaned every so often. You definitely don't want that toxic stuff leaking out.;)

Hey Thor, I started a 450g exactly like yours in October, and just came acrossed your thread....sweet stuff. I also have the Reeflo 250...didn't mod it with the longer neck and collection cup yet though. Did you add the upgraded needle wheel also? It looks like you used a different pipe (or cut the stock pipe) from your skimmer return just below the neck...or did you use the super short pipe for the first riser? I am still trying to dial in my skimmer, but with only 5 tangs in my tank I think I am getting just about everything out I can. Thanks for the info!

hey Thor, not sure about the QT yet....it'd need to be a big QT set-up to house that many tangs....I have had a Powder Blue and he wasn't too bad in terms of territorial (he was in a 75g!) I've heard stories though...and don't want a bully in the tank. I had an amazing clown tang in the 450, too bad he was such a bully. I caught him and sold him to a local reefer.
