I have heard of alot of people reuseing the sand. The tank will be set up mostly for fish, but will have a couple of softies, and about 100 lbs of live rock from a mature system.

I would use the old saltwater from the tank to wash the old sand and than get rid of the old water and most of the stuff that is in the sand will go with it.

I have used old sand many times but I believe this to be a gamble. As cheap as sand is replace most of it and seed with the old.... to many factors which can lead to disaster.

I went to lowes and bought 150 lbs of play sand.It contains silica, would this be ok.
I've reused sand that was sitting in a bucket for 6 months. No issues at all. My reef is doing fine.
Reuse. Take the money that you saved and buy a fancy coral.

I've reused my sand. As noted, rinse it well with water change water. I do the final rinse with new saltwater.
